Digsby: Manage multiple social networks, e-mail, IM accounts - 5000 invites!
We're suckers for all-in-one applications. That's why we were excited to check out Digsby, a new all-in-one utility for managing multiple IM, e-mail, and social networking accounts. Digsby just launched in private beta this week, but we've got 5000 invites to give away to Download Squad readers. Keep on reading to find out how to get yours.
Digsby is a desktop client that lets you chat with contacts no matter which IM service they use. It also includes an e-mail notifier, and a pop up screen for keeping track of Facebook and MySpace updates. You can even add a Digsby chat window to your Facebook page so that anyone viewing your profile can send you instant messages which you can reply to using Digsby.
When you first run Digsby, you'll be prompted to add accounts for each service you want to use. Under IM, you can choose AIM, MSN Messenger, Yahoo! Messenger, Google Talk, ICQ, and Jabber. For e-mail, you have a choice of Hotmail, Gmail, Yahoo! Mail, AOL Mail, or any POP or IMAP e-mail service.
The social network options are a bit more limited. Right now you can only choose Facebook and MySpace. We'd love to see support for Friendster, LinkedIn, and other social networking sites.
Overall we're pretty impressed with Digsby. It offers a nice range of features and customization options. For example, you can choose to view email notifications in the application only, or in your system tray. You can arrange your buddy/contact window an almost infinite number of ways.
If Digsby had support for Twitter, YouTube, and Flickr, we'd never have any need for Flock or 8hands. But since this is an early release we're holding out hope that we'll see support for more social networks in the future.
If you want to take Digsby for a spin, just download and install the application and enter "dlsquad" when asked for an invite code. Digsby supports Windows XP and Vista at the moment. Mac and Linux clients are under development.
[Thanks Michael!]

I got a email response from someone at digsby and he assures me that there are not viruses in digsby. And as olga9999 has said, it looks like it's a problem with AVG.

There's a new build out that fixes some problems (such as not working behind proxies and full unicode support).

It's a great idea, but it just way too bugy at the moment.
Nothing seems to work and the memory leak is impossible to deal with.
I'm sticking with my 8hands which offers only few of digsby's features, but it works.
The IM in 8hands is limited to social networks friends, but the notifications are way better and it supports all social networks, not only Myspace and Facebook.
