How to surf the web even if Internet Explorer is disabled
Ever find yourself sitting in front of a computer that's been locked down by an overzealous IT administrator who won't let you install any software or even open Internet Explorer or Firefox? If that PC is running Windows XP, there's a good chance you can still visit Download Squad (or other sites if that sort of thing appeals to you).
All you have to do is launch a Windows application like Calculator, and then click the Help button. Under Help, click "Help Topics," which will bring up a help window. Next, all you have to do is right click on the title bar and select "Jump To URL." Now you can type in any web address you like, but make sure to include "http://" at the beginning. Basically what you're looking at is Internet Explorer 6 inside a help window, but this version of the program isn't quite as smart as IE6. It won't automatically add the http:// for you. And of course, there's no bookmarking feature.

Knoppix is a bootable CD that circumvents 99% of restrictions. When you're done, reboot & remove the CD and Linux was never there... its great for clandestine ops.

So is Ubuntu....

A system administrator with any sense would disable booting from CDs and USB flash drives in the BIOS so your idea wouldn't work.

Sure, if your IT admins were too stupid to disable booting from CD... and didn't lock the BIOS setup.

Been in the game of IT for 10 years, most IT admins walk away forgetting to block options in the BIOS... especially when users are problematic. Even the US Govt. allows for CDs to be bootable. They call it imaging. Very few organizations smartly disallow bootable CDs or floppies. If your computer doesn't have a CD or DVD drive, there's always the QNX demo that boots from a floppy and gives you a simple browser. If that doesn't work use telnet or SSH to a shell account like cyberspace.org and type lynx at the prompt. In short, if I can touch it, I can own it... computer security is as much a myth as physical security.

On XP I created a shortcut to:
C:\WINNT\hh.exe http://google.com
I now have a new "default" browser...

Another great method I remember is one I used when someone panicked and removed all her links to Internet Explorer.. I simply opened up a folder, and typed a URL into the address bar. All of a sudden she had her internet back. =)

All you need to do is press F1 for the help screen in most windows applications, even windows itself. If you are looking at the desktop then press F1.
This will only work if administrators have not locked down the system to connect through IE, if this is so then your system will not connect even through the help trick.

God bless you!

Just a note to that if you want to block IE or any other program then try my freeware at www.zenox.net/software and download AppBlocker XP.
