Download AVG Anti-Virus Pro for free
We wouldn't be surprised if you only know AVG for its free anti-virus software. Along with Avast! Avira, and a few other companies that don't start with the letter A, AVG provides a full-fledged virus protection suite free of charge. But AVG also provides a "professional" version of its software that comes with some advanced features like extra scanning and scheduling options.
For example, the free version only lets you schedule a single virus database update per day, and one computer scan a day. You can schedule multiple events with the Pro version. You also get higher speed downloads with the Pro version.
AVG Pro usually goes for $29.95, but Computeract!ve is giving away free licensed copies through Jan 17, 2008. Good luck getting their download link to work, but fortunately CyberNet has pointed us to a couple of mirrors.

Hmm I have NAV 2007 on my machine, do I metrely deactivate it, or do I have to remove it totally, B4 using AVG?
z0iidDec 26th 2007 4:29PM
You have to remove it entirely.
Yes, it is good that AVG is free, but if you still have NAV paid up, you should continue using it. You can still DL the free copy of AVG for use later. I don't like NAV, but it catches more viruses that AVG. For a really good product - check out NOD 32. ESET is the company that produces it. (Look at their white papers on independent comparisons of different AV products.)

BTW, for those installing this over AVG Free, select the "Repair" option when the installer prompts you. It's probably a good idea to shut down AVG before you start the "repair", too.
That's how I went with it, anyways, and it worked.

Ian, be sure to use Norton Removal Tool (http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039) if you plan on removing NAV for AVG. Norton is a pain to remove totally. Most of the big-name anti-virus programs require a bomb to remove fully. Granted, you can always go into services.msc and prevent them from starting up (and most of the time it won't cause a conflict) but if it's there, it's taking up space and may cause problems down the road.

Cool! Now I have AVG Pro and Comodo Firewall Professional. And this security solution is entirely FOR FREE and legal! :D
MarkDec 27th 2007 8:43PM
Only for one year though, then it expires and you have to pay to continue using it. I can't say I'm bothered much, AVG has the worst detection rates of the bunch. Not saying it's junk or anything, just the worst. I use Avast! myself, it's completely free and I don't need any of these "pro" features anyway.

@Mark: Could you point me to the review(s) you based this on? I'd appreciate it, since what I've found on my own has been inconclusive. Thanks!

That 'couple' link makes McAfee's SiteAdvisor badge turn yellow, so I'll just keep waiting on the http://www.computeractive.co.uk/avg/index ftp download thank you very much, especially since the 'mirrors' link no longer has the file anyway.
