Comodo Firewall Pro 3.0 released
Comodo Firewall Pro, one of the best firewalls available for Windows XP and Vista, has just been updated to version 3.0. Like all previous versions, Comodo Firewall Pro is free, and we like free. Unlike many other free (and some pay) firewall programs, Comodo has a rock solid record for security; we like this even more.New features in this update include a change to the user interface (it looks more professional now and less GUI 101), an updated host prevention engine and application analysis, and a great new feature called "Clean PC" which profiles all the applications on a new PC (or a freshly formatted PC), registers them as "safe" and then only allows applications you approve to be installed. That's a great way to avoid malware from getting installed on your system - or the system of a less technical savvy relative. The application white list has also been updated to nearly 1 million trusted applications, about a 100x increase over Comodo 2.4.
One warning for users of Windows Vista and Avast! anti-virus, there seems to be a conflict between Avast! and Comodo, leading to long start-up times in Windows Vista. Updating to the newest version of Avast! before installing Comodo can help this problem, but it is still unresolved. Fear not - the program has only been in final release for a day - we're confident the conflict will be resolved quickly, but until then, you might want to wait on Comodo Pro Firewall 3. For everyone else, if you are still using the Windows Firewall (or worse, no firewall at all), we recommend giving Comodo a try.

How does this compare to zonealarm?

Is this a conflict with Avast! only when using Vista? or is it with Avast! when you're using XP as well?
Christina WarrenNov 22nd 2007 3:32PM
The conflict with Avast! only exists with Windows Vista users.
As for comparisons with Zonealarm - well, I definitely think it trumps the free version, and I personally prefer it to Zone Alarm Pro. The beta for Outpost 2008 is the only for-pay firewall that I like any better than Comodo - but they appear to be about even in actual performance.

i was using Kerio a few hours ago, and switched to Comodo for a try. What deeply bothers me is that it doesn't allow to directly create custom rules from alerts (like this http://www.malekal.com/fichiers/kerio/kerio_firewall_regles_filtrages.png )
When there is an alert in Comodo, you can only automatically create a rule or apply a preset (which is a nice feature).
To create a custom rule, you have to open their dashboard.
It's annoying me because i want, for example, to be simply able to control where an unknown application connects, and to allow or not a connection to *that* location.
Aside from that, it's indeed way lighter than KPF(4).

There also seems to be a conflict with spam software "Spamihilator". Thus, I removed
Comodo.

How does this compare to PC Tools Firewall Plus?

The previous version of Comodo was my personal favorite firewall and has always gotten high reviews and performs well in almost every tests
The free version of Zonealarm is pretty poor, and from what I've read doesn't pass most leak tests. The professional version of Zonealarm gets great reviews and is top notch, but I prefer Comodo, it strikes me as being less "in your face" for some reason (and it's free!).
Cheers.

I've just been poking around the Comodo forums and have found quite a few complaints from people having major problems after installing v3. It sounds like there are quite a few niggling compatibility issues and users might be better off waiting a bit for some of these to get ironed out.
On another note, Matousec.com rates the free Online Armor Personal Firewall as one of it's two top firewalls, and so it might be worth a look.

Beware. I was using the previous version and it worked great. Up pops a window asking me to upgrade so I did. Both PC's (one laptop, one desktop) became unusable after installing 3 pro!! I needed to hack the boot and erase all traces of 3 pro before the PC's came back to life. Looks like Comodo has a few big bugs to get rid of before this thing is stable. It's a shame because the previous product was amazing, especially when you consider it was free.

The "best firewalls" link on the 1st line leads to a blank untitled tab or a Server Not Found error page at the following address in FireFox v2.0.0.8:

Upgrading to Comodo 3 caused me to receive "... not a win32 application" error for all applications within Windows XP SP2. Safe mode was ok and I was able to uninstall it...wait awhile for the next version...

I have installed the new Comodo v.3 and (so far) only have one problem. I am on a dial-up connection and use NetZero for my ISP. I can dial up the first time without any problem. However, if I disconnect from the internet, and then try to dial back up, Comodo will not allow me. I dial into NetZero without problem. However, the authentication process does not complete. After I re-boot my PC, I can get get into NetZero without problem.
This is not a problem with NetZero -- after I uninstall Comodo, all works just fine no matter how many times I reconnect. Reinstall Comodo and the problem returns.
In other words: in order to log onto NetZero using Comodo it has to be be the first log-on after a boot. Does anyone have any ideas why this is happening and how I can overcome it. Re-booting is not really an option.
Thx,
Dave
