Google prepping Gmail 2.0
It might be a good idea to scrutinize your Gmail account more closely than usual these days. Not only is Google in the process of rolling out IMAP support, but it looks like some users are able to access a new version of Gmail. If you notice a new option that says "older version" or "newer version" at the upper right-hand corner, you're probably in. It should be right between the "settings" and "help" tabs.
Google Blogoscoped has a series of sreenshots showing some of the differences. Gmail 2.0 reportedly loads faster, although it's a bit early to say how much faster. And there's a much more detailed contacts section. There's a new contacts manager and the option to add images for contacts directly from Picasa Web. There also appears to be an option to "filter messages like these" from the Gmail "More Actions" drop down box.
If your account has the new interface, please let us know in the comments if you've noticed any other differences.

How can you have a 2.0 for a product that's still in beta?

ive got it but i noticed something today thats very very interesting. i go to york university in toronto ontario canada and when i logged into my gmail at school today (in scott library on keele campus using ie6) it was the OLD version of gmail and yet when i log on @ home (with ie7 or firefox 2.0.0.8) its gmail 2.0
WEIRD
anyone else noticing anything like this? im going to try tomorrow to log in to gmail via firefox @ york and see what happens (also check what version of firefox york is using these days)

well i am back at york
it seems that it IS ie6 which doesnt work with the new gmail a.k.a. gmail 2.0
yorks computers are running internet explorer 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_gdr.070227-2254 and when you log onto gmail it is automatically old style with no way to change it to new
if you log in with firefox which here is version 2.0.0.3 it goes into the new gmail
as i said before WEIRD!!!
anyone think of a reason why this is?

I have recently covered Gmail v2.0 on my Tech Blog. have a look on http://thetechmag.blogspot.com/2007/11/gmail-v-20-whats-in-it-for-you.html. I recently had an exception in Gmail 2.0 too, when the service was trying to load a page when the internet connection was Out.
In all a cool experience so far, but I guess its too early to comment on the performance

I got the new version this morning but the contact manager isn't working.
Messages load very quickly though. From the little use I've had with it, it seems to pre-load from the top down (I could be wrong). So new messages at the top of your inbox are preloaded so when you click on one it comes up instantly.
Then I went to starred and clicked on a message about halfway down the page and got the 'yellow loading' message at the top of the page and it took about as long as usual.
So it seems it is much, much faster for preloaded message and for ones it hasn't got to yet it is the same as before.
Downloading Safari 3 now to see if the contacts manager works in that.

For those of you who's contacts manager isn't working. I just fixed mine by uninstalling a firefox addon called better gmail.

i wont lie, i didnt notice that i got the newer version until i read it somewhere that google had it out. now that i know though, i pick up the small things, like the font on the chat list being larger and the "Loading..." font being different. plus the contacts/filters thing of course

Don't like the new version. When I try to click on a link in an email I get a message about pop up blockers, tried to click pop up okay but still doesn't work. Should be able to just click the link and receive the info, which you can on the older version. Also, sure seems a lot slower.
I like the older version better.

When I click to open emails in new version they do not open, just give a message "Loading..." at top forever. Never does load. Never does error out. I can mark as "SPAM" in new version. Empty SPAM and TRASH folders in new version, but can't open or compose emails in new version. This is on my home computer which uses the HughesNet satellite. The new version works fine from my work PC which accesses via DSL 3Mbps line. Been trying to think of what different could be for last couple of weeks. Satellite latency is all I can think of as a known difference.

If you make a change such as archiving an email then try to close the window too soon, you get an error box saying that a communication to the server is in progress and if you want to possibly lose your changes then you can continue. This is why I click "Older Version" every time I log on.
