Gmail gets IMAP
When we checked Gmail Help database this evening, Gmail had said that they support POP, but not IMAP. Then a few minutes later, that doc was gone, and a stack of IMAP related help docs were up. The new pages explain how to integrate the new mail feature. It's as easy as setting up POP, but with huge benefits.
Why is IMAP integration a good thing for Gmail? POP was a stepping stone, but IMAP pushes Gmails benefits over the top. With IMAP, users can now access their email via a desktop application like Outlook or Thunderbird, read emails, make changes, delete, and have the changes made across platforms. So if you now log into your Gmail account, the message which you read in Thunderbird, will now be marked accordingly. No more wasting time trying to sift through emails that had already been answered.
Take a peek under your Settings in Gmail, and click into your 'Forwarding and POP IMAP' tab to see if you are one of the lucky ones who got IMAP first.
UPDATE: Some users are reporting that if they log out and back into Gmail accounts, IMAP settings are showing up! There is hope!
UPDATE 2: Dont worry if you IMAP isn't appearing in your account, Google will be rolling it out to everyone over the next few days.

Is there an RSS-feed equivalent of IMAP? That is to say, is there a standard by which multiple RSS readers can sync to one another in a way similar to multiple IMAP email clients? I love Google Reader, but it doesn't work right on my Nokia 770. There's a built-in RSS aggregator, but I want stuff I read on my 770 marked as read on Reader. Of course, IMAP Gmail is nice too...

As a french user, I set english (us) as main language, then activate iMap, and finally go back to french as main language...
En tant qu'utilisateur français (ou francophone), j'ai mis le langage anglais (us) en langage par défaut, j'ai ensuite activé iMap (qui était apparu) puis remis en français :)

I have GMail Apps, and also IMAP-enabled.
I had a short connection with RC to the GMail-server...and now, 'can't connect tot the IMAP-server'...
Is this connection very unstable?

Live Mail does not have IMAP. You don't even get *POP3* with that junk unless you pay for it! Gmail gives you both, for free, and it works with any client that supports IMAP.

here is a tip if you want to get rid of that extra [Gmail] hierarchy. Go in to your advanced email settigns and for "IMAP Path Prefix" type [Gmail] now go back and reassign your Sent, Deleted, and Draft mail boxes, if needed.

I hope you don't mind if I use your image in an article that I am writing at http://blog.codesignstudios.com/2007/10/25/gmail-imap-support-up-with-photo-and-video/. I have given due credit and linked back to this article.

It is all about mobile access. GMail is now able to offer mobile access from handsets to par with industry solutions like Visto and AxisMobile

a blow for those advocating web based mail as a replacement for desktop MUAs.
This is good.

Great news! No more forwarding my Google Apps email to my Fastmail account... We definitely have Apple and the iPhone to thank for this.

I tried setting up IMAP even though I don't have the setting in GMail... and it works! Just follow the instructions in the link above.

Interestingly enough, if you HAVE access to activate IMAP, and then you switch to "basic HTML" , you lose that option. So the "html" trick wont work - you can only get the IMAP options in "standard" view. No idea why, though ...

Yeah, as soon as I changed from UK to US English, I got it.
PerryOct 29th 2007 12:38AM
Yes. I was able to add my Gmail IMAP account and now gmail should behave the way it is supposed to. Hooray!
MarkOct 29th 2007 12:58PM
guys, select your language as English (US) and then you'll get it. This is a common occurance with new features for Gmail - first they roll everything out with the US version, and then, as it get's localised they add said features in the other languages.
Enjoy!

They should define what "next few days" means. Is that like a week? Two weeks?
I have it on my ooooold early beta days account which I don't use anymore. But my google apps and current gmail address still don't have the goodness showing up in them.
