Gmail gets IMAP
When we checked Gmail Help database this evening, Gmail had said that they support POP, but not IMAP. Then a few minutes later, that doc was gone, and a stack of IMAP related help docs were up. The new pages explain how to integrate the new mail feature. It's as easy as setting up POP, but with huge benefits.
Why is IMAP integration a good thing for Gmail? POP was a stepping stone, but IMAP pushes Gmails benefits over the top. With IMAP, users can now access their email via a desktop application like Outlook or Thunderbird, read emails, make changes, delete, and have the changes made across platforms. So if you now log into your Gmail account, the message which you read in Thunderbird, will now be marked accordingly. No more wasting time trying to sift through emails that had already been answered.
Take a peek under your Settings in Gmail, and click into your 'Forwarding and POP IMAP' tab to see if you are one of the lucky ones who got IMAP first.
UPDATE: Some users are reporting that if they log out and back into Gmail accounts, IMAP settings are showing up! There is hope!
UPDATE 2: Dont worry if you IMAP isn't appearing in your account, Google will be rolling it out to everyone over the next few days.

None of my accounts have it enabled yet. Sighhh...

I live in HK, I don't get it even relogin a few times.

I thought Live! Mail only had IMAP for the Outlook client?

Looks like this is only available in the US English version of Gmail (a lot of new Gmail features appear first in the US English locale) - I use the UK English version, and there's no option. But, if I change the locale to US English, I get the option. No idea if it will remain enabled after I switch back to UK English though...

No such luck :(
Was hoping to get it configured before heading to work.
Fingers crossed that it's enabled when I get home tonight ;)

Looks to me like it's only enabled for gmail.com accounts.
Have just checked on an old gmail.com account and that has the option. A newer googlemail.com account does not.
Wonder if that's the defining factor right now?

I've got it on my main Gmail account but not the domain I manage through Google apps email. Very handy though.

I have the IMAP-option on my regular GMail-account, but not on my Google Apps-account.
Too bad, because I use the Google Apps account for my primary email, and the regular GMail-account is just a backup.

Yessss it works!

Could someone please post relevant HTML source och activation form? Would help a bundle in investigation.

Google adds these things one server, or one set of accounts at a time because it takes a massive amount of time to update every account and doing it at once isn't realistic or necessary.

Don't know if anyone has checked out the gmail main page yet. I signed out and signed in and found that I DIDN'T have the feature. Then I signed out and saw a link that said "New Features" and all hope was restored because I read this: "Don't fret if you don't see "IMAP Access" yet under the Settings menu. We're rolling it out to everyone over the next few days."

Yeah changing my language locale to English (US) enabled the IMAP option for me too!
RenéOct 24th 2007 8:46AM
"If you can’t find it, make sure your Gmail display language is set to English (US). I had mine on English (UK) and the IMAP feature was not available until I switched it to English (US)…" quoted from googlified.com. Worked for me.

I dont have the IMAP otions in my gmail settings but I just tredt to connect with outlook 2003 and it worked!?
Roleo HibachiOct 24th 2007 9:39AM
Anyone know if the likelihood of getting IMAP privileges is inversely proportional to the activity of new-ness of the account? My old, mostly unused account got it but my main account didn't. It looks like a few other people had their 2005-ish accounts get the privilege and not their newer one.

I still dont have it!! I tried signing out/in, i tried changing language but it was already set to english (US). though i changed it to espanol and back to english anyways. i have had account since 8/27/2004 i guess that doesnt matter though...i guess i'll just have to wait.
