Now that a handful of lucky folks have gotten their hands on Windows XP Service Pack 3, we're starting to think you might not want to upgrade to Windows Vista anytime soon. Okay,
we already kind of thought that, but it turns out SP3 includes a ton of security updates, some Vista code, and a couple of
brand spanking new features for Windows XP:
- There's a new Windows Product Activation model that does not require you to enter a product key during setup.
- Network Access Protection modules and policies have been brought over from Windows Vista.
- There's a new module in the kernel that provides access to cryptographic algorithms.
- Windows XP can now detect routers that are discarding data.
Overall the update includes over a thousand patches to improve security, performance, and reliability.

...or, if you're doing anything moderately out of the ordinary and want a stable OS, try using one of the server OS's as a desktop - soooo much more stable.

I don't get all the fuss that goes around any new OS. Don't we all spend 95% of our time in the higher layers, that is, in applications? The OS, I see it only when it fails!
Anyway, as far I have understood, Vista gives me vastly less bangs for my bucks, especially those I have spent on hardware. I prefer knowing my CPU and GPU cycling on my own demand and for my own direct benefit. Shouldn't we all be growing a conscience about our usage of energy nowadays?
SP3 for XP sounds like a very good news as I also hope being able to turn of that automatic update mess after that. 6 years of beta testing should start to show some benefits.

Apparently (I have never used it) vista is a very unstable OS. The difference between vista and XP RAM usage is huge: My XP installation works great with 512 MB os RAM, but Microsoft reccomeneds 1 GB MINIMUM for Vista. I won't be upgradeing anytime soon, I'll probably stick it out intil Windows 7 ("Vienna"; "Blackcomb") is released in 2009.
XP SP3 sounds great, and will probably hold out until I absolutely need to upgrade. My buddy still uses Windows 2000, and I certianly don't mock him for it. However, I'm waiting for the public release, I mean, this is a beta version for a reason...
