Vixta: A Fedora Linux-based Windows Vista clone
Vixta could be the Linux distribution with the smallest possible target audience ever: Linux users who love the look and feel of Windows Vista and wished their Linux desktops could look more like Windows.
Vixta is a Fedora-based distro with a custom KDE-based interface. You get widgets, a Vista-like start menu and taskbar, and evil looks from your die-hard open-source buddies. Under the hood, there's no mistaking Vixta for Windows. If you're a Linux user, that's probably a good thing, but somehow we doubt Vixta will convince many Windows users to switch to Linux.
You can't run Windows apps without the help of WINE, and while the menu system may look like Windows, all the underlying programs are Linux equivalents. That means you get Konqueror instead of Explorer, OpenOffice instead of Office, and Firefox instead of, well, Firefox. OK, maybe switching isn't really that hard, but try telling that to your grandma.

This would be a good prank to pull on April Fool's day -- replace a friend's Fedora KDE-skin with this thing and watch them freak out.
YoniOct 5th 2007 8:49AM
Wow!, Thank God it only simulates Windows Vista look! Here is my chance to get rid of Windows Vista in my sister's PC next time she asks me to install a fresh Vista copy :P
Oh yeah, I have to see her face looking at me like: Which Vista version is it this? ...lol
Readers, get rid of Windows once for all... Discover the open source and you will never look behind ever again!
TravisOct 5th 2007 8:49AM
Ironically, because it's a Vista clone, it's in directly a Mac OS X clone... since Microsoft just copied the Mac OS.
Funny how everyone wants to be Apple these days.

Apple Stinks

@Travis:
Funny how Apple fanboys always think that non-fanboys are jealous of them.. sigh.. open your eyes and get a life. Are you really so insecure that you have to say these thinks?

Obviously Travis has never heard of Xerox.
DerekOct 5th 2007 4:05PM
Ah yes, good old OSX, the Ubuntu of BSD. Have a tall glass of that Kool-Aid Travis.

Copy cats.
BTW: Vista pretty much offers what OS X has plus more. Such as actual support.
@Yoni : Yep, I'm quite sure you sister is going to be very happy when her programs won't work, or she can't use her IM to chat with her friends.
She'll love it!
Cammerv8Dec 29th 2007 11:36PM
WE GOT GAIM(pidgin), EMESENE, AMSN, Skipe, well any chat program you want!!!!
try it before you talk man!!!
michaelDec 30th 2007 1:22PM
@Cammerv8:
But why download so many chat programs? Lol.
A few good ones, like the OFFICIAL clients are better than all these alternatives the combine them. Yet, they don't have the full features as the REAL ones.
Sorry, but Linux loses again.

Oh, for the love of God NO.
asdasdOct 7th 2007 5:13AM
I doubt that this programme will get a lot of users in the "central European market" as its name would remind any German user of people masturbating. Too bad

"she can't use her IM to chat with her friends."
Did you ever try aMSN? Pidgen? Google Talk for Linux? Just because it's Linux, doesn't mean there's no good software. With the right skin, aMSN is almost indistinguishable from the real thing.
RCOct 6th 2007 12:37PM
Nope Vista and Vista is waay better
olegOct 7th 2007 9:49PM
hey micheal , i checked out your comments on other stuff , just wondering a couple things: how much does microsoft pay you to say that stuff , and how does it feel to have sold your soul to big software

How much does Linux pay you to say that stuff?
RIFRAFOct 10th 2007 4:13PM
you know, it's not that bad of an idea, even though it resembles Vista. It could be used as a breaking in distro for those afraid to give up MS. Looks the same but not the same,, I think it could possibly work..
Ekrem ErsoyOct 12th 2007 8:10AM
I don't like M$ Vista's UI or MacOs's UI..
I like it Gnome way..
ak5Oct 18th 2007 2:14PM
And another Windows vs Mac vs Linux flamewar erupts
I agree with the dude that said awesome prank - completely true - I will do that for sure!
Oh, just so I said something you (didn't) want to hear:
Linux >> all
M$Window$ $ux
Mac is for... well most of us know
