Apple: Boot Camp Beta set to expire any day now
Been booting Windows XP or Vista on your Macbook for the last few months? Well, you'd better get ready to upgrade to OS X 10.5, because as soon as Apple releases Leopard, your Boot Camp Beta is set to expire.Apple hasn't announced when Leopard will launch, but it's expected out sometime this month. But the company has posted a message on its website saying that Boot Camp Beta versions 1.3 and 1.4 will stop working when Leopard is out. Boot Camp Beta versions 1.0 through 1.2 expired at the end of September.
Boot Camp is built in to Leopard. But if you don't feel like dropping money to upgrade your operating system you won't be able to boot into Windows. You know, unless you have a PC lying around.

Rumor has it Boot Camp will be Leopard-only. I don't really believe that, but it is possible. However, NOT providing a backwards-compatible version (even with caveats) would be a terrible idea. What about companies who have machines unwilling to upgrade? (You know, where they have to test them and such before allowing client computers to install a new OS)
Apple should extend a 1 or 2 month grace period for this pretty essential beta!

That is why piracy is for me!

The article is partially untrue....(I can't find my source) but supposedly only boot camp assistant expires, you're still allowed to use the partition. but that also means you really can't remove it...unless you like start over from scratch i guess?

What does that mean for me and my combined Boot Camp/Parallels partition? I generally only boot the partition in Parallels, installing it via Boot Camp was just for trying out Windows natively. Will this partition still work in Parallels after the Boot Camp beta has expired? Seeing as I don't use the Boot Camp software, I'd like to think that I'm safe!

Hey Brad,
I got burned for using much more moderate language than this; see the ensuing discussion on my site:
http://createdigitalmusic.com/2007/10/01/apple-boot-camp-soon-far-less-valuable-upgrade-to-leopard-or-else/
Basically:
* The "license" is what actually expires at Leopard launch.
* The bootloader, which actually allows you to run your OS, shouldn't expire, ever. If you read Apple's support document carefully, you'll see they only ever refer to the "license" and the "Boot Camp Assistant."
* The Boot Camp Assistant will stop functioning. That's of course necessary for drive partitioning and Windows installation, plus driver CD creation, so you do ideally want access to it ... but if you've run it once, you should be able to get by on Tiger and the bootloader until you install 10.5.
* When the Boot Camp Assistant stops working is actually unclear. If you have an old beta, it may have ceased functioning already, on 9/30. But 1.3-1.4 appear to be functioning until 12/31/07, because that date was baked into them when they were built.
Apple is still saying you need to upgrade in October, but if you're willing to ignore them and their license, you can wait. Waiting is especially important to us music folks, because typically any changes to the OS can involve audio and MIDI driver issues. I don't actually anticipate that'll be a huge deal on this OS, but I certainly won't be running out to install Leopard the day it ships, either.

Guess what?... After using Boot Camp Beta past expiration, now my MacBook will only boot directly to my Windows partition! I cannot access my 10.4 OS!!! Is Apple trying to tell me something???
