Watch almost any video with SMPlayer
There are a lot of useful media players out there for handling pretty much any video format you can throw at them. VLC is a pretty nifty all-in-one solution, as is Media Player Classic.Martin over at gHacks just turned us onto another powerful media player, SMPlayer. It's a front-end for MPlayer, and comes in Linux and Windows flavors. There's also support for a whole slew of languages.
The best thing about SMPlayer is that it just works out of the box. You don't need to install any additional codecs, and it will handle everything from Quicktime movies to Windows Media Video. Of course it has no problem with DivX, XviD, and other MPEG-1/2/4 varieties. It does not appear to support Real Media files.
Is SMPlayer a VLC killer? It's hard to say. But it does have a clean, simple interface that makes it pretty attractive if you find the bells and whistles of VLC a bit confusing.

In my opinion mplayer already blows away vlc, just look at its options, http://www.mplayerhq.hu/DOCS/man/en/mplayer.1.html no other player i know is as flexable or consumes so little resources. The only thing missing is its lack of a decent gui, smplayer looks like a step in the right direction.

Wow!
I've been looking for ages for a good .flv player and this is by far the best I've seen.
Most, including vlc, can't seek in .flv files - If you try to skip forward it just shuts down. The only other one I've found that can seek is nFLVPlayer and it's horrible.
This is so quick and smooth with .flvs

in linux, you can play rmvb with smplayer (or better said, with mplayer) if u placed the needed codec file in it..
i wonder if it can be done the same way on windows box. but i think it is positive

You may also want to look at rulesPlayer which has the exact same concept and is pretty stable. The coolness factor is very high because its programmed in D :). Think C++ done right (modules instead of those awfull preprocessor macros for example, and three different kinds of const). http://www.dsource.org/projects/rulesplayer/wiki/screenshots_home

You may want to try these other two players. They are both much better than VLC or SMPlayer, both have internal codecs, have lots of additional features and are skinnable:
KMPlayer: http://www.kmplayer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=63
or GOMplayer: http://www.gomplayer.com/main.html

I use GOM Player (http://www.gomplayer.com/) nicely done, fast and free.

Well, all of you gomplayer fans should take a look at this page http://www.mplayerhq.hu/design7/projects.html
At the bottom where are the blacklisted mplayer projects you should find a link to your gomplayer... ;)

I downloaded this today and threw as many different videos I could think of at it. It ran them all smoothly (which I couldn't say for VLC)

I prefer GOM - http://www.gomplayer.com/main.html as opposed to VLC now. It is a very nice all in one player which looks good and feels nice.
