FileZilla 3.0 released
It's been 3 years in the making, but FileZilla 3.0 has finally been released. There aren't a lot of new features in this excellent free FTP client. But the code base has been rewritten from the ground up. And here's the best thing. It's now cross-platform. FileZilla 3.0 runs on Windows, Linux, and Mac.Because this is a total redesign, FileZilla 3 installs to a new default directory. That means you can install FileZilla 3 without uninstalling FileZilla 2. It also means that your settings will not automatically be imported, but there's an easy solution:
- Select "Edit" from the menu
- Click "Import"
- Browse to your Filezilla 2 folder (probably in your Program Files directory).
- Select the file titled FileZilla.xml. This is probably the only file you'll see anyway.

Is there any reason to choose this over SmartFTP?

FileZilla is one great piece of software, there is no bloat-ware like SmartFtp or any of that fancy interface. BTW it has very small footprint compared to Smartftp or for godsake if you must WS_FTP.
Thank you Tim. I use it everyday.

Thanks!
Filezilla is for me. Love the new tree view.
Seems slower to open than the prior version, otherwise, I'm sold.

It's free.

Another great improvement in this version is the file transfer speed over SFTP. I just tested tranfering a large text file between my workstation and a server on the LAN here. Version 2.3.x got up to maybe 300 KB/sec, while 3.0 went along at slightly over 6 MB/sec. So, for anyone that uses this on a high speed network with SFTP, you will see a great transfer rate improvement.

Cross-platform, I like, it goes on all my OS now!

Only bad thing is the Site Manager - where your sites are listed is too small.
And I can't figure out how to configure the interface. I don't want the quick connect and few other panes. Can't figure out how to get rid of them in 3.0

I really like FileZilla. One function I miss in v3 that was in v2 is the right click "View/Edit" option.
Hopefully this will return in future releases.

Another feature that seems to have disappeared is the 'keep folders in sync' function, whereby as you moved around your local folder structure, the remote structure would follow you, so you could easily send files from various folders. Very useful, and now gone for some reason.
