Eudora 8 beta email client is based on Thunderbird
If you were born before 1980, odds are you've used the Eudora email client at one point or another. While Outlook, Thunderbird, and online email services like Gmail and Yahoo! Mail get all the attention these days, once upon a time Eudora was the bomb.Well, digg up the parachute pants, because Eudora is back, this time as a Mozilla project. The new Eudora is based on the open-source Thunderbird email client, but has the familiar look and feel of Eudora.
Eudora 8.0.0 beta includes Eudora's toolbar icons, keyboard shortcuts, and menu structure, among other things.
You can easily import mailboxes and messages from Eudora or from Thunderbird. There's also an option to import filters from Eudora, although this won't work with every filter as Thunderbird doesn't use the same structure as Eudora.
Eudora 8 beta comes in Windows and Mac varieties.

Eudora was very popular at the time. But it wasn't free. I guess it is the same sort of story as the fate of Netscape. But if it is going to be based on Thunderbird, does that mean it is going to be free?

It's going to be free, but the whole project strikes me as a bit odd. It's essentially Thunderbird but with a Eudora "skin"... kind of like if they took GIMP, remade its interface into a clone of Photoshop's, and called it the next version of Photoshop.
(That said, the development work being done on the open source version of Eudora could be rolled over into Thunderbird. So the Thunderbird project benefits from this, regardless.)

@Franklin:
Ideally, the plan is that Eudora will eventually take on Outlook in enterprise (business). Eudora has back-end tech that appeals to this market that could become implemented into Thunderbird, helping to make Thunderbird even better and feature rich for the average user.
So, Eudora becomes the "enterprise branded" version of Thunderbird, and would be marketed and commercially supported as such. Thunderbird is the base version that "everybody else" uses. Both would be free to download and use and remain open source.

I've used Eudora for years after one-too-many Outlook crashes in which the compressed data files was lost. I kept checking Thunderbird to see if it was even close to the power or layout density of Eudora. Thunderbird has way too much "empty space" in the design and abysmally inadequate filtering compared to Eudora. The Peneolope team is the same as the Eudora team from Qualcomm. This is more than just a "skin".

It would be very hard for Eudora to take on Outlook in enterprise since it has now calendar interface, shared contact or any other other sign of basic GroupWare. It this case I would place my bet on ZIMBRA client (http://www.zimbra.com) and eM Client (http://www.emclient.com) both with calendars.

I think it's almost impossible for Eudora to take on Outlook in enterprise since it has no Calendar interface, task sharing or any other sing of basic GroupWare that is necessary. I would place my bet on ZIMBRA Client (http://www.zimbra.com) or eM Client (http://www.emclient.com)

Thunderbird does have a calendar plugin (Lightning). I just hope they integrate it better now.

I am STILL a Eudora user. No other Mac app has the same powerful filtering abilities. Apple mail has smart filters but leaves the mail in the inbox??? Thunderbird doesn't filter as I can tell.

Re: FREE - Eudora has been free in sponsored mode for about 10 years and was is a lite version

I have used Eudora for at least 12 years. I switched to Eudora after a previous email client crashed and ate several years worth of email. Some clients store messages in one big proprietary "database". These are not industrial strength DBMS's, nor are they just plain old robust ASCII files. I have not lost any email in 12 years and I save most of it.
I tested Eudora 8 (AKA Penelope) through a few paces and only found two things that either need work or I need to find the work around.
1) when uninstalling Eudora 8 should NOT delete email messages without asking the user
2) the shortcuts imported from Eudora 7 did not all work correctly (Ctrl-M is supposed to check your mail)
To me it looks good enough to make the shift.

Just to set the record straight, Eudora 8 does not delete your saved mail when it is uninstalled....

The new Eurdora seems to lack to lack two features I do not want to give up: the ability to edit a received email (which allows one in effect to make notes on a letter) and the ability to highlight text in an email which will then, in a right-click menu, allow one to transfer the email to a mail box.
Does anyone know why these features were dropped in 8.0?
Thank you.
