Mozy - PC and Mac online backup you never have to think about
We've mentioned Mozy before, first just over a year ago, then more recently in passing, but somehow we've never mentioned that the service is available for both Windows PCs and Macs. Having used it now for just over a month on a Mac, the surprising thing is that it truly is "set and forget". It's possible to hide Mozy in your user interface so completely that you don't see any clue whatsoever that it is running, and yet it's there, faithfully backing up your precious data. While we haven't upgraded to the paid version (mainly because we haven't needed to), the free version of Mozy is operating like a champ. Keep in mind that it's not a full-drive backup; for that you should be looking at something like SuperDuper! for the Mac, or Acronis True Image for the PC.

Hi there:
One way of mitigating a risk of disaster is to have an online backup service. I have been reading about the online backup and storage industry for a while now. It is becoming a commonly accepted technology these days.
For online backup news, information and articles, there is an excellent website:
http://www.BackupReview.info
This site lists more than 400 online backup companies and ranks the top 25 on a monthly basis.
It also features a CEO Spotlight page, where senior management people from the industry are interviewed.
Cheers,

I agree with Anthony, Mozy is great. I've been using it since it was mentioned here earlier this year.
Once you set it up, it just runs in the background and you never have to worry about it. You can configure it to only run when the machine is idle so it never interrupts your work or hogs your bandwidth.
If you use my referral code we both get additional space for free. https://mozy.com/?code=F5AS78
Thanks.

Here's my referral link if anyone would be so kind as to use it. As the above posters said, you get an extra 250 megs for it.

I've been using Mozy on WinXP for 6 months now, and it works great! $4.95/month for unlimited storage space? Hell yeah! My ISPs upload speed meant that it took 6 weeks to back up my 120GB of, err, family photos, but once that completed, Mozy is easily able to keep up with my daily activities. Retrieving archived backups isn't instantaneous - in testing, it took about 5 minutes for my files to be restored to a server for my download. But as a true offsite disaster recovery solution for my home PC, it's definitely worth the $$. The only downside I have noticed is that, when I set a folder to ignore, Mozy doesn't automatically ignore new subfolders created in that ignored folder. That's probably a design feature (better safe than sorry), but I'd like to be able to specify a directory to ignore and have it AND ALL ITS SUBFOLDERS unconditionally ignored. For now I just remember to uncheck the new folder in Mozy after creation.

My daughter has been trying for 3 weeks to install her backed up files from Mozy onto her Vista laptop. The archive file that is used to restore files does not function, and Mozy's sporadic support has not been able to fix it, even though she is a paying customer.

If you would like an extra 256MB of storage on top of the 2GB (which will also give me the same), you can use my referral link here:
https://mozy.com/?ref=CQC6RC
or alternatively just enter the code CQC6RC by hand during the registration process.
Also, if you use my code, I will travel to wherever you live and give you a hug*.
*Hugs valid only for redemption within the greater Reading area of England. All others will receive a mental ‘air hug’ which will make you feel all warm and gooey inside.
