Naming kids weird things, like @
Just because you like the internet, and have a strong desire towards email, there is no way on earth you should be able to name your child '@'.That's just what a couple in China is trying to get away with. It is their life after all, but think of poor '@' when he's 5 going to school, or 16 and trying to get a date. The couple claims that the '@' symbol professes their love for the little bundle of joy. You see, in China 'at' or sounded out 'ai ta' apparently means to 'love him'.
China does have a ban on using ancient characters in names. It's not known whether the couple was actually allowed to name their child '@', but if they are, maybe we'll soon see a few $, %, &, and !'s sprout up around the country.

This is as stupid as that New Zealand couple trying to name their baby 4real, the gov't denied them because names can not contain numbers. Now they are trying to name the child Superman. Personally I think people like this shouldn't be allowed to put there DNA in the gene pool.

That's gonna suck when @ tries to get an email address. Or fill out an online form for that matter. "You may not use special characters in your name."

LOL @ mark. that is so true!

Don't these idiot parents realize that they are ruining their children's lives by giving them all these stupid names, just so THEY can get attention for themselves. These kids are human beings, not pets! Imagine what they have to go through in school when their name is Superman or some stupid symbol. This should really be considered abuse.

It's not so bad. I mean, it seems to be a workable name in Chinese, at least. If he ever needs to fill out his name in English, just use "At", or if he feels self conscious about that, then "Ahta" or something.
I might consider it myself someday, for my child, though I'm not insane enough to actually try to use the "@" symbol as the name.

Maybe I should change my name to "emdash" -- sort of a copy-editor in-joke?
