AOL replaces free Kasperky anti-virus software with McAfee
There are a variety of great, free anti-virus programs out there, including ClamWin, Avast! and AVG Free. For the past year or so, this blog's parent company, AOL has also been offering a free anti-virus program, based on powerful Kaspersky software. For some reason, AOL has decided to stop offering the popular Kaspersky-powered Active Virus Shield, and has instead replaced it with McAfee Virus Scan Plus.
The anti-virus software is still free, although you'll need an AOL screen name in order to download the program. The McAfee suite includes a firewall as well as anti-virus features. But if you're running Windows XP or Vista, you might as well just use your operating system's firewall.
Oh yeah, and don't expect to install McAfee Virus Scan Plus on top of your existing anti-virus software just to take it for a test run. When we tried that, we were told it couldn't run without uninstalling AVG Free.

that is because mcafee is more "user friendly" with the simple fix it button that never fixes anything. mcafee is almost worse than norton av 2007 in memory hogging. sticking to my sygate firewall thanks.

You guys took it a step further than I was willing to go...I didn't even want to try and install it. :)

Hey Ryan,
I was actually going to write this up the same day that you did, but for some reason AOL wouldn't take my AIM screen name. I waited until today because I was actually able to download the software. But I wasn't willing to uninstall my existing virus software to check it out.

I haven't used the McAfee firewall solution, but I do know that the XP firewall is basically worthless. It only blocks incoming connections. If you are served a malformed header in a web page, and it spawns a separate connection(not unheard of, certainly) then what good was your firewall? I would prefer the warning...

You shouldn't use 2 firewalls or antivirus anywqays...well, Antivirus, there are exceptions...you could use 2, but not 2 "Active-scanning" Antivirus solutions. I heard they can conflict with each other...
Same with firewalls...2 firewalls is a definate no-no...

Just keep AVS, don’t use McAfee, it’s bloated and detects less viruses and spyware.
All you have to do is delete the first 2 lines in “C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\AVP6\Data\aol-updcfg.xml” :
and update works again!
After that, install the latest version (with more options like trusted zone!, you don't have to uninstall, the update works seamless) from
http://download.nullsoft.com/avs/AVS_v25.exe
or from Softpedia, if you don't trust the link.
