True machine learning is a holy-grail of computer science. The idea being, if computers could learn like humans, eventually they could be tasked with defining and solving problems for themselves, without the tedious step of modeling required to turn real world situations into streams of ones and zeros. One computer, at the University of British Columbia, has taken baby steps towards learning to process language.
The system managed to identify the vowels of both English and Japanese, without being fed information as to how many vowels it was seeking. Mimicking, in a small way, the learning process of an infant. It's kinda creepy, sure but, how else are we going to build a race of super-intelligent silicon based life forms?
"
Dave, what are you doing?"
