Get better battery life with Vista Battery Saver

Two of the biggest battery hogs in Windows Vista are the flashy Aero user interface and the gadget sidebar. So it stands to reason that if you want to get the most out of your laptop's battery life you'll disable these features when running on battery power.

Vista Battery Saver does more than save your battery. It saves you time. Every time you unplug your computer, it can automatically switch off Aero and your sidebar. Plug the power cable back in and they'll reappear like magic.

Tamir Khason has just released a new beta version of Vista Battery Saver with bug fixes and one new feature: the ability to automatically switch between power management plans when you plug/unplug your laptop.

I wanted to be able to preserve power by killing / starting processes depending on whether my laptop is plugged in or not. It doesn't seem like that would be difficult to find, but I can't find it. So, I took a foray into visual basic and wrote it myself. Well, it's certainly a hack and a half, but I got what I basically want going. It seems pretty functional.

FWIW, according to Tom's Hardware, the difference between running Aero and not running Aero is a whopping 1 watt.

Feel free to do more testing, but so far as I can tell, Aero does not any meaningful overhead in the battery department.

Verizon is about the only place you can get the authentic RIM product and matching door. Most other sites are out of stock and even when they are in stock they have the black battery door which looks like crap.

Lenovo will not gurantee us that
we have cells that are not defective. In fact they have confirmed that our Lenovo battery
packs have the same battery cells that are know to be contaminated. I am very upset that
Lenovo is not doing a similar recall of the known contaminated cells!
