See where eBay items are located using Visual eBay
What happens when you mashup Google Maps with eBay? You get this hideous creation. So it's not the best designed mashup we have seen, in fact its pretty crude, but Visual eBay does provide a little visual glimpse into the world of eBay auctions. This mashup pinpoints the exact locations that auctions are taking place in. Search for a keyword under a category and choose either the U.S., Canada, Australia or England, and Visual eBay pinpoints the locations on a Google Map. There is also a Google Gadget for Visual eBay that can be placed on your iGoogle homepage.
Visual eBay seemed to be a little buggy for us when trying it out.

Hi Chris,
thanks for your review. I agree with you about the current UI 8)
We're following the release early, release often mantra and wanted to get this version out for people to use as soon as possible.
Expect a nice new shiny version soon.
BTW: When you say a little "buggy" could you please provide some feedback so we can fix that.

Hmmm... there are many of these mashups out there, and this is one of the weaker ones. See, for example, http://www.findnearby.net/ which handles craigslist and ebay, as well as a collection of other convenience features.

Rob - thanks for updating. By buggy i mean that the system seemed to search for quite a while and not return any results.

Chris, thanks for the feedback. We'll look at the logs and try to tack this down.
Michael, yep...there are 4 or 5 well known eBay/Google Maps style mashups. http://www.markovic.com/markovic.com/ebay/search.php was probably the first. And I think http://dudewheresmyusedcar.com is a pretty good example too.
http://vbay.info is different in that it's not just focusing on the US. And it doesn't just deliver proximity searches. We've found that a lot of users want to know where eBay items are located - but not necessarily just near their home. Sometimes you can spot interesting pockets of items, may just be planning a trip, or who knows what else. Really how users use it is up to them...we just layout the patterns for them 8)

Rob,
I like the idea of a global capability. How does one search outside of America? The only drop down is 'America'.
Confused.

Chris, sorry to use your blog as a tech support channel but this is the only way I could reply to Sean 8)
Sean, if you reload your page now that should be fixed. There was a typo in the drop down menu that only broke in some browsers. Thanks for pointing that out.
Any other feedback you have would be very welcome via feedback@vbay.info.
