Not so fast Safari; at least according to Wired
Think Safari is faster than IE and Firefox, we'd heard the hype too. According to Wired however, there may be little truth to that widespread perception. In tests performed at the "wired labs" -- which we imagine as the cubicle of some geek with a nerf gun -- Safari is several seconds slower loading common AJAX based pages like Google Calendar and GMail. The cult of Steve may drink the Kool-Aid but, we're not fully buying it yet. With security holes, quirky interface bugs and now some data that suggests we'll lose valuable seconds off our lives waiting for new email, we're wondering what all the hype is about.

Unless safari becomes open source. I don't think I'll ever support it.

There is really no reason for current windows users to switch over to safari, especially us elite 25 percent that use firefox. Not only does the web surfing experience devoid of any ability to customize, but the browser goes ballistic with some sites, namely Yahoo! Mail's beta web client.
The anti-aliasing is so strong, even on the lowest settings, that most sites are obnoxiously fuzzy (talk about eye strain). Some of the UI quirks we let slide with itunes have no business in a webbrowser, something that should be more functional than aesthetic.
I'll pass until they actually provide something compelling for a firefox user to consider.

I've done my own tests, and Apple is RIGHT on, it literally is twice as fast as IE. These remarks are usually all "marketing", I have found in my tests, it truly is much faster than the competition. 2X as fast on IE 1 1/3X as fast on Firefox.
I will be using Safari in my web "Safari's" from now on.

Safari for me is slower to open, and usually about the same speed as Firefox... But my PC meets the minimum requirements, so maybe a better system would perform better.

Okaaaay, second comment today - I must be going for a record.
This is a terrible test for one simple reason: it's friggin' Gmail. I'm not sure if you realize it or not, but since there are completely different javascript engines in those three browsers, they are serving up three different types of javascript to each browser. If you log in with Safari, you get a different page than with Firefox. The same is true with IE.
Also, while this may be a "real world" test of the browsers, something as small as a slow server can cause massive shifts in the speed of the _downloading_ of the files. That said, we're talking about rendering speed, not waiting on some AJAX thingee to load some tables off a database.

gmail changes its behavior when it knows it's running on safari. those tests may be skewed because of this.

I downloaded, and tried Safari, and it changed my desktop to the charcoal gray color. I know it's a beta, but should it be messing around with my settings like that?

I didn't come across any noticeable bugs in Safari. Actually it is still in beta and the final release will fix most of the glitches. Mainly the blurred text.

As a longtime Mac user, I can safely say FF on Windows is much better than Safari.
Safari/Win is the biggest travesty of UI design I've seen from Apple. I realize that Windows users may be used to "skinned" apps, but Safari takes the Windows UI and spits on it.
When applications don't fit in to their windowing environment it bugs me. Apple obviously has the ability to make Windows apps look like they belong there. I don't know why they feel the need to OS X-ify everything.
@Brandon:
Font smoothing is subjective. Personally, I think Apple does it better. ClearType pisses me off; it's so subtle.

Actually Gmail on dialup loads up very quickly with me. IE7 sucks basically because it is integrated into the OS, which everytime I visited a site with IE I felt like i might get hacked, with Safari - I do not feel afraid...IE is now downgraded to only Activex sites and MS WGA activation parts of the website...
Oh you do not believe me - well there was an outlook patch out and I choose not to download it at FIRST because I do not use outlook - well lo and behold secuna reported that I can get hacked even with visiting a page with IE7 which sucks by the way..since outlook is too integrated into the OS and IE or basically IE, so I downloaded it and installed it...
So again since safari is NOT INTEGRATED into the OS, i feel safer...and yes it does have its probs for now, however that WHY it is still in BETA or public BETA, DO NOT DOWNLOAD IF YOU DO NOT WANT ANY PROBLEMS OR TO PUT UP WITH ANY AS THIS IS NOT THE FINAL RELEASE BUT AGAIN A PUBLIC BETA... :) So be willing to DEAL with IT...

it sucks..i was hoping to see it its better than IE of FF..i guess i was wrong...im not looking for how fast this browser can go.
im looking user friendly browser, in matter the fact, in my experience, apple products never were user friendly.
my first time install this browser on my windows. the borwser itself give me no text/fonts in the borswer itself. its ok, i fix it anyway and continue using it for awhile. and i click on the bug icon...guess what it crashes.
that's enough for me. enough with apple products.
ramcoscaJun 14th 2007 10:42AM
I guess you've never really used a Mac, yayie. Not user friendly is not true.
knoopxJun 14th 2007 10:30AM
Even that the page downloading and rendering process is faster and "smother" (still need lots of fixes, 1/5 pages i cheched were wrong, but apple pixel smothing is the way it should be). Apple has nothing to do with the browser market. I would never use Firefox in my macbook and i will never use safari in my pc just because i cant stand non-native UIs.
archerJun 14th 2007 12:43PM
i'm having fun playing with it. pros: colors seem cleaner, truer, richer. the autofill feature is quick and efficient. cons: the bookmark system is ridiculous. many of my bookmarklets don't work, such as my beloved del.icio.us player button.
but speed? i don't think so; not compared to slimbrowser or opera.
stubbszJun 15th 2007 3:04PM
I don't use Safari on my mac but I just tried it on my PC. IT is way faster than ff or ie. Quite surprised and probably won't use it yet...security issues and anti-a is a bit too much.
Your test is seriously flawed. What strange sites to pick for your comparisons.
