Free Active Virus Shield is now Vista compatible

Active Virus Shield doesn't take up much memory, runs a series of different scans, and can detect spyware as well as viruses. The downside is that up until now it was Windows XP only. Install it on a computer running Windows Vista and you'll be greeted with a BSOD, which could cause you to waste about two hours of your day using system restore and trying to uninstall/reinstall your previous anti-virus software. Not that we speak from experience.
And that's why we're not linking to the official download site right now. Because while AOL has released a new version that runs like a dream. But it's not available on the official download site. But Neowin and Softpedia seem to have the updated version. You'll also need to sign up for a free activation code. But we recommend doing that after you download the file (which should be AVS_v25.exe, not AVS.exe), just to make sure you don't accidentally download the wrong file from AOL. Of course, if you're running Windows XP, download any version you like.

Anyone mind filling me in on if this is really worth the price (the price being that it comes from AOL) versus other free anti-virus programs? My mother's Windows OneCare Live subscription ran out, and I was going to just install Avast!, but I always hear such good things about Kaspersky...

That's funny - I just went to install it on a friend's vista box, and I was surprised to see no vista version on their site! Thanks for the other link.

Well, wait. I have Kaspersky 6.0.2.614. That's compatible with Vista, correct? If it isn't I'll be kinda mad... though I did get a deal on it.
It seems to work, but maybe not as well as it could? It works amazing now, it'd be cool for it to work even better.

activation code? what is it mean?

I downloaded the AVS_V25.exe file, then decided to scan it before installing. I went to jotti.org and two of the scanners on that site (including KASPERSKY!!!) identified this file as containing a password stealing trojan!
Can someone verify that this file is indeed safe to install?
JEfromCanadaJul 3rd 2007 10:04PM
My previous comment is incorrect. I misinterpreted the result screen, and regardless, did not notice there is a 10MB filesize limit on Jotti (the file I sent was 18MB, so the result I saw could not have been for that file!).
I apologize for the chicken little response!

Afraid Active Virus Shield is no more. AOL have ditched it. Nice of them to fail to tell us.
Back on AVG now.

Can everybody tell me how to download AVS_v25.I have no screen name. The website does't let me register & always says that it encounter the errors.

Just keep AVS, don’t use McAfee, it’s bloated and detects less viruses and spyware.
All you have to do is delete the first 2 lines in “C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\AVP6\Data\aol-updcfg.xml” :
and update works again!
After that, install the latest version (with more options like trusted zone!, you don't have to uninstall, the update works seamless) from
http://download.nullsoft.com/avs/AVS_v25.exe
or from Softpedia, if you don't trust the link.
