New video site, FunnyOrDie.com

When it was announced that Will Ferrell was behind a project called FunnyOrDie, the hope among many was that it meant he was either going to finally make another funny movie, or go ahead and give up on life. Alas, this is not the case. Instead, Ferrell's production company is launching a new video website, FunnyOrDie.com. The site, which launched a beta release last week, allows users to upload comedy videos, and have the site's users determine whether or not the videos are funny. Videos judged as funny stay on the site, while the other videos are shipped off to a "Crypt" section of the site.

A clip featuring Ferrell and production partner Adam McKay that was uploaded on the main page of FunnyOrDie.com has already been enjoyed by several million people, which coincidentally, is several million more than enjoyed Ferrell's latest full length movie. FunnyOrDie.com is funded in part by the venture capital firm Sequoia Partners, who previously provided early rounds of funding to YouTube. They also lent financial support to Google, Yahoo, PayPal, Cisco Systems, Oracle, Apple, and quite possibly God himself. The fact that Sequoia is on board, combined with the star power of Ferrell should equal a pretty successful endeavor. It is said that the site will contain some video starring big Hollywood stars, but that the bulk of the content will come from everyday users.

If the video uploaded on the main page of FunnyOrDie.com right now is any indication, this could turn out to be a very entertaining website. Let's just hope that Ferrell has the foresight to keep it Jon Heder-Free.
