Microsoft updates Windows Media Player plugin for Firefox
Microsoft has launched a Windows Media player plugin for Firefox 2.0 that supports Windows XP and Vista. The plugin is compatible with versions of Windows media Player from 6.4 to 11. There's a known issue with Firefox version 2.0.0.3 on Windows Vista, where the installer does not work the first time you try it. All you have to do is restart Firefox and then install the plugin again.
It's good to see Microsoft improving compatibility with a competitor's product, but we can't help wonder why it's taken so long.

Great. I literally spent an hour on this LAST NIGHT, and I ended up having to download some dlls from some shady site and copy them to my FF plugins folder. It works, so I'm not eager to try the official remedy, as I'm afraid it will end up breaking my kludge.

I was skeptic in downloading and running an exe file. Gulped, downloaded it anyway and ran it.
Tried to start firefox... crashed, tried again.. crashed, and again... crashed... :-(
Uninstalled it... now I'm happy again

Heh, maybe it took so long because WMP is a piece of shit. Who actually *likes* viewing video in a browser, anyway? I mean, OK, YouTube is popular, but if I have the choice of viewing a video in a browser (which 99% of the time these days means it's low-quality Flash), or downloading a higher-quality WMF or AVI or even QT file, I'm going with the download every time. And I'm sure as hell not going to be viewing it in some MS bloatware like WMP. Media Player Classic does absolutely everything I need (except, oddly enough, playlists?), is highly customizable, and loads in far less than half the time. MS can keep their plugin.
