Google to add Power Point style presentations to Google Docs

Google Docs and SpreadsheetsGoogle CEO Eric Schmidt has confirmed there will be a presentation layer for Google Docs & Spreadsheets. While Google has web-based applications for word processing and spreadsheet management, the addition of a Power Point-style presentation application could be the final step in turning Google's online office suite into a serious Microsoft Office competitor.

As with Docs & Spreadsheets, the new program will be focused on collaboration, allowing multiple users to edit a presentation.

There've been rumors for the past few months that Google was working on presentation software. So far, there's no sign of a presentation layer on the Google Docs & Spreadsheets page, but it's not clear from Schmidt's remarks if the new service is ready to launch or still in development. Of course, since it's a Google product we can be fairly certain it will bear a beta tag whenever it does make its first public appearance.

Update: It looks like Google has acquired Tonic Systems to help with the presentation software, which is due out this summer.
