Thunderbird 2.0 due out this month
Read/WriteWeb report that Thunderbird 2.0 will be out by the end of this month, with a final release candidate due out this week.So what's in store for Mozilla's open-source email client? Integration with Gmail and .Mac, message alerts, and new ways to organize emails by using Gmail-like tags. You can apply labels to messages, and then search for those labels later. Or, unlike Gmail, you can still separate your email into folders.
The Gmail and .Mac integration basically means that it's easier to set up Thunderbird to work with webmail accounts. It's not quite the same as having a Gmail-like interface in a desktop application, but it does mean you don't have to work as hard to configure your POP and SMTP settings.
The update also includes optional new message alerts, which will pop up every time an email arrives at your inbox. If you only want alerts for the most important messages, you can apply filters that will direct most emails away from your inbox.

Does anyone know if this version will check my hotmail or windows live mail account? That is the only reason I'm clinging to outlook express.

You say "or your can, unlike gmail, still use folders" like it's a bad thing.
You know - there are still people - lots of people who don't use gmail.
I don't want a gmail interface on my desktop. I don't want labels.
And my thunderbird already has a notification of new emails - right on my taskbar. I wouldn't want it in a pop-up.
Great new integration features I guess.
Just please realize that gmail is not the end all, be all of email. Your bias for gmail (and constantly highlighting it in posts) now comes across as the standard to you. If it's not gmail, if it's not done by google, it's not good.
And that's not true. Yahoo's beta is terrific!

Actually, "unlike Gmail" was meant to highlight a benefit of using Thunderbird. While Gmail lets you tag your items, many people still prefer to separate their emails into folders. And you can't do that with Gmail. Thunderbird 2.0 will give users the option of using folders, tags, or both.

Brad,
You can separate your gmail email into folders using filters, labels and archiving.
1) create a filter, enter your search items, click next
2) on the next screen, check: Skip the Inbox (Archive) and check: Apply the label, save the filter.
I use this all the time, email that matches any of my search criteria go directly into the folder I specified and skips the inbox.

TM: You need to check out the Webmail extension for Thunderbird - http://webmail.mozdev.org/ . That will allow you to access your Hotmail account from Thunderbird.
