Everyone has a bone to pick with MySpace - some people even have
30 days worth of 'em! - so we say: switch to Virb!
We sure did. With AJAX layout tools, Flickr streams, iTunes plugins and
upcoming features like blog RSS importing and multiple layout saving, Virb is social networking done right, and it's already a hit. There's just one problem: Virb is currently in beta and only accepts a limited number of public signups each day. So instead of trying your luck, why not score an invite from Dowload Squad! We have 100 shiny new Virb invites to give away, and all you need to do is leave a comment on this post with a good idea on how to improve social networking. Tell us what's missing and what feature(s) you think will help Virb take the web by storm, and we'll reward you with an invite! It might take us a few days to get all the invites out, but if you hook us (and Virb) up with some quality feedback, we'll get you into the site that gives social networking a good name!

First of all I am a true fan of DL Squad...and enjoy many of the sister sites as well.
For many social networking sites, I believe a tool to be able to see who has visited your page (whether individuals, bands etc) would be a great add on. You can then look for feedback from those people if they choose.
Would love to check Virb out.

I want a site that reflects me as an organized individual. Not one that looks like I vomited advertisements and animated gifs randomly.
How can I speak to my friends without yelling through the mass of rubbish? If Virb is clean, and it doesn't look like they just simply found an empty area and decided to fill it with crap, then I'm in.

If there was a plugin that synced the social networking site (be it myspace or Virb) to Outlook so that users could download content or reply much like an offline rss reader, then perhaps everything could be organized in a better format.
Also please some way to get rid of ads without paying an arm and a leg! Is there any way to fuse our blogs without having to set up a crap blog in myspace?

email Notification by default needs to die. Switch over to a pull-method of informing people (RSS feed or gadgets) that only bothers us when we WANT to be. I am sick and tired of EVERY site I sign up for emailing me by default every time something remotely related to me happens. Give me the power to be spammed only when i want to be. Smart RSS feeds by default, email only as an option.
i'd love to try Vibe out.

make it easy for people to GO outside and talk to people in person. that is what social networks need.

The idea of a "social" or "people powered" web site implies its under user control - Draconian rules of places like myspace come to mind.
Twitter is everything myspace should be - fun, lightweight, and it lets me establish rules and conditions.
I'll check Virb out if you're gonna give away invites!

How about:
1. "Official" Firefox Plugin... Maybe a toolbar that will only appear when you are on the site or at your beckoning call. Maybe containing easy Login, Hit Counter, Intra-Site Mail Access, Blogging access.
2. A cool page skinning/customization engine.

Simplicity for new users but a more advanced layout/features for the experienced users. also the ajax is a nice touch, dont really like reloading pages all the time!
oh, another good thing would be an app so that you can view the whole site or just your comments/messages/etc.. on your desktop, either an actual exe (and stuff for mac and linux) or active desktop kinda thing!
Really wanna check out virb tho, it sounds pretty sweet!

Stop the insanity of forced music on page loads that MySpace has and you'll be miles ahead.

I second Manny's thoughts on Gmail integration - not only so you can have one place for all of your messages from accounts, but as a means of synchronizing calendar (and maybe even contact) data.
And what's the chance of getting embeddable gadgets like what you can do on Google's and Windows Live's customizable homepages? Giving the gadget-love to your visitors is not necessarily a bad thing ;-)

Consider channel integration or channel management for the emerging video and HD content services (Dovetail, Joost, Democracy Player) - do for video content what Myspace did for bands.

*Sighs* Too tired....EDIT: that should have read OUTLOOK integration...sorry :-)

Didn't recieve an email for confirmation so am trying this.
I congratulate Virb on having a Web 2.0 style as MySpace looks as if it is coming from the win 98 era.
A feature would be an aggregated RSS feed to see all updates to friends' posts etc.
Another one would be that the users still have control over how their page looks but give the option to customise it in a blogger beta kind of way. Make it your own but still keeping it looks snazzy and so it fits in with the rest of myspace.

haha, hey guys, dont mean to mess up DS' plans or anything but you can sign up right now, for free, on your own.
as of now there are 2141 signups left!
better sign up quick!

Perhaps some sort of plugin for popular media-player software to automagically stream the text of your playlist to your Virb page - have a section labeled "Now Listening" or some such and have your current track list displayed.
On a similar note, integration w/game consoles' online status (i.e. Xbox Live gamercards, Wii Miis, and PS3's...whatever...) to give (optional) live notification to viewers/friends.
BobMar 19th 2007 4:45PM
As long as you don't have to have that dude "Tom" as your friend, I'm all for it. Great design and simplicity is also nice.

If social networking places would use standards, and other developed ideas. How Myspace has it's pieces of software, that other programs do and can do it better. So, if the social networking sites would incorporate other tech, everyone can benefit from that.
Allowing easy customization. Something that has less garbage then Myspace but more then facebook. That would be great. Have something that the everyday person can understand.
A social networking sites should be focused on social networking not everything else under the sun.

Hi! I'd love to check virb out.
Thanks
egordinMar 19th 2007 4:56PM
I think the sheer simplicity. Myspace is a complete and utter mess. I would love an invite.
