StolenID Search - Are you on the list?
No this is not a post on the hot TV show Heroes but is about a FREE site that allows you to search for your Social Security Number or credit card number in their database they build from scouring the web. It is what it sounds like, no fancy Ajaxy Web 2.0 junk, just enter your numbers and click the button, get the results. I can't tell you what the information looks like if it finds your information, because mine was not found.
So where did they get their data from? Well from the FAQ on their site, here is their response. "The information that powers StolenID Search is found online, by looking in places where fraudsters typically trade or store this kind of information. All information behind StolenID search is publicly available, but not in places where search engines such as Yahoo and Google would look. TrustedID abides by all state and federal laws in the collection and provision of this compromised information. The information behind StolenID Search comes from collection efforts led by TrustedID directly and also from other reputable companies that assist us in finding this information on our behalf. One of those companies is Cyvellience."
Of course after your search they offer up information about subscribing to their Monitoring product offering. But it is not that should detract you from searching for your information.

Um, how do we know that the data we enter about ourselves are not saved? A better option would be to enter the hashcode of my SSN or a credit card number. Scary and dodgy...

I'm with David! :)
My first reaction to the site was: Are you kidding me?
We are told over and over again to be very careful about entering personal info on the web. Now, here is a site that says it will search for stolen ID's, all you have to do is enter your ID. :)
I'll pass.

Wow.
Just. Wow.
Come here. Enter your SSN or CCN and we'll check if anyone stole it.
Akin to: Give me your wallet and credit cards and I'll see if anyone stole your money or used your credit cards.
Trust us.

I agree with the above comments... this sounds like a bad idea to begin with.

I have just started a website called "Stolen E-Mail Addresses". You have to type in your valid E-Mail address and the site will tell you if it has been stolen.
Unowingly to the public I will gather all E-Mail Addresses that stupid users type in the search box and sell them to spammers.
Will download squad feature my website, please? It is such a great idea.

Mr. TrustedID,
Tell ya what, instead of asking for a SSN and/or CCN, why not ask for a range of SSN's and/or CCN's and this display a list of all the numbers that are considered stolen and let the user see if their number has been stolen?
So I enter: 123-45-0000 to 123-45-9999 and then look at the list of numbers that have been stolen in that list.
I don't care how much you say you are ligit, I'm not submitting my SSN or CCN to any website. End of Story.
