PC Pro is reporting that
Microsoft will be extending support for Windows XP beyond 2010. It had originally intended to discontinue support for the operating system at the end of January 2009, two years after the launch of Windows Vista, but has pushed back the date in response to customer appeals. Now it says that "mainstream" support for XP will cease in April 2009 but "extended" support will continue for an additional five years, but only for Windows XP Home and Media Center editions. Extended support includes fixes for security holes but excludes warranty claims and "non-security hot-fixes or design changes." You can read more about Microsoft's lifecycle policy in the
official FAQ.

Quick note: the extension applies only to XP Home and MCE...because Pro already had it.

Windows 98 'support' ended quite some time ago but I still favor it instead of XP, use 98SE at home and XP at work so I can easily experience the diffrences.
* Runs faster than XP
* 2.4GHz P4 with 1GB RAM boots up in 20 seconds
* Most new '2000/XP only' software will work on 98
* No hassle reinstalls in 15 minutes (No calling Microsoft to activate)
* XP's System restore often does not repair problems or fails completely
