Ad-aware is one of those essential programs that kills a myriad of spyware and other threats on your PC.
Ad-ware 2007 is getting ready, and in the beta-testing process right now. Lavasoft doesn't say when the RC1 version will be ready, but it sounds as if it will be in the next few months. The new version will feature a ton of updated and improved features including enhanced Code Sequence Identification (CSI), real-time Ad-Watch protection, advanced auto-scheduling, and a new GUI. I am personally looking forward to this release, as I use this program all the time to help friends with spyware infested PC's. It may not be the best tool for advanced use in the field, but it is a good, user-friendly app to leave on someone's computer to help them long after you have moved on. I have been a fan of Ad-Aware for quite some time. The 2007 version should be good, so I hope it gets released soon.

So what would be "the best tool for advanced use in the field"? I live in the trenches every day and safe mode scans with adaware, spybot, Mcafee Vscan and maybe eweido are standard.

You should check out CounterSpy by Sunbelt. They're working on V2 (currently in Beta); when it's finished, it will be the product to beat. Read about it here (under the 'CounterSpy Cookbook' heading). They don't offer a free home version, which is unfortunate.
