Any Video Converter
[Update] I've changed the link to one suggested in the comments as being a more correct link. Some readers below experienced virus warnings when visiting the original link, although personally I did not, and had no virus issues with the download. I suspect this is a case of McAfee being a little overly-sensitive in its virus detection (in other words, a false-positive), but I have no way to know for sure, hence the updated link. When you start dabbling with video files on a PC, one of the first things that happens is you realize that you need to convert a file from one of the myriad of video formats to another one. Then, as you start investigating how to go about doing that, you find that it's not such a simple task - at least that's what I found.
That's why I was very happy to discover Any Video Converter. This monster of a little utility can convert almost any video file to almost any others. The list of supported formats include DivX, XviD, MOV, rm, rmvb, MPEG, VOB, DVD, WMV, AVI to MPEG-4 movie format for iPod/PSP or other portable video device, MP4 player or smart phone. Oh, and did I mention that it's free?
Although it claims to be fast at converting files, the reality is that converting video takes time, and depending on the level of compression and file size, sometimes LOTS of time. That's just how it goes.

I need to convert WMV files to MPG in order to use Pinnacle video editing software. Any Video Converter works really nice for this, but after I downloaded and installed it I couldn't play MPG files on Windows Media Player. I get sound and visualizations but no video. Does anyone have a suggestion, or an alternative free software recommendation? I also convert files for the V3c and appreciate the information on SUPER. I'm anxious to try it. I doesn't look like it would do anything with Winnows Media though.
Thanks
John

Any Video Converter is no longer a free product which means that the "freeware" tag attached to this article should probably be removed.
If you want truly free Ipod video converters, use the far superior Super Video Converter or Videora Ipod Converter instead:
