Any Video Converter
[Update] I've changed the link to one suggested in the comments as being a more correct link. Some readers below experienced virus warnings when visiting the original link, although personally I did not, and had no virus issues with the download. I suspect this is a case of McAfee being a little overly-sensitive in its virus detection (in other words, a false-positive), but I have no way to know for sure, hence the updated link. When you start dabbling with video files on a PC, one of the first things that happens is you realize that you need to convert a file from one of the myriad of video formats to another one. Then, as you start investigating how to go about doing that, you find that it's not such a simple task - at least that's what I found.
That's why I was very happy to discover Any Video Converter. This monster of a little utility can convert almost any video file to almost any others. The list of supported formats include DivX, XviD, MOV, rm, rmvb, MPEG, VOB, DVD, WMV, AVI to MPEG-4 movie format for iPod/PSP or other portable video device, MP4 player or smart phone. Oh, and did I mention that it's free?
Although it claims to be fast at converting files, the reality is that converting video takes time, and depending on the level of compression and file size, sometimes LOTS of time. That's just how it goes.

I tired downloading this software . . . and got a virus alert on my machine. In fact, I got this alert when I attempted to load their web page. What's up with that?

Even though it does not seem to recognize the dvr-ms (windows media edition) file type, I've been able to convert these files to avi with no problems. Nice little trick.

Yeah, same here.

This story is misleading, this cannot convert files to any format. The only format it can convert them to is mpg. Also this is just a frontend for free software like mplayer and mencoder (and interestingly does not give credit or even mention them anywhere).

It appears a better (also free) choice is SUPER (Simplified Universal Player Encoder & Renderer):
http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html
I've used the 2006 version for the past 6 months or so with good results, and the 2007 version was just released.

I have been using SUPER http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html
since quite some time now and it truly fits the completely free any-to-any video converter.

McAfee virus scan didn't complain about this program -- what Trojan are you seeing? Is it in any-video-converter.exe, or something else on the web site?
In any case, I couldn't get this program to work -- it keeps showing weird error messages that look like lines from a .bat file.
Has anyone got it to work?
churroJan 7th 2007 2:22AM
yea i agree super is easier and cool

And stop posting bullshit about trojans and other crap, GET A REAL ANTIVIRUS! Any Video Converter IS 100% CLEAN.

anything similar for mac? i've been trying to bounce around between realvideo and more quicktime-ready formats for a while, but with limited command-line experience, i'm finding this to be a bit tough.

Nothing happened on my computer.
But I sent the link to a guy in my office.
His anti-virus software popped up an alert and his computer shut down.
So that site either has a trojan or it has something that looks like a trojan.

I'm getting a trojan virus warning as soon as I visit this page also, someone should take this link down.
Mark C.Jan 9th 2007 11:11AM
McAfee did complain about this website. If your dat files are updated, you will get the virus message with McAfee. Not a good site to link your readers to. Anyone that did not get the virus message better update your scanners and run a full scan.
