Microsoft Gets Desperate - Free Vista Business, Office Pro 2007
This isn't exactly the kind of promotion one normally sees leading up to a major OS update. PowerTogether.com is a promotion put on officially by Microsoft offering full licenses of Windows Vista Business or Microsoft Office Professional 2007 to any US resident (sorry international readers) willing to watch 3 (for each license) informational video or interactive presentations, answer a few questions regarding the content of the presentations, and Now, I can vouch for the legitimacy of this promotion, as Microsoft has done this kind of thing in the past (I participated in one about 3 years ago to get a free copy of Visual Studio, which I to this day have never taken out of the package). The subject matter of the presentations may be imposing to some, but if PowerTogether is anything like the VS promotion, the answers to the questions are more about the quality of the content than the content itself.
The PowerTogether promotion requires IE6 or higher to complete.
Update: Sean from Microsoft has confirmed that the site is part of a legitimate promotion. The site is struggling under the weight of all you guys hitting it at the same time. Patience is a virtue.

I can't fill the surveys at the end of the webcasts...
I can't see the links for the surveys. How can I complete those....
bobNov 29th 2006 12:43PM
I have one that is completed and two that are not. I did all three yesterday, so now I'm just waiting for the others to complete.
DavidNov 29th 2006 12:51PM
I get the "Pending" but no "Completed" icon... and I really did spend the 3+ hours viewing this too! (I figure I'm getting over $600 worth of software and with 6+ hours I'm making $100/hr to view these webcasts, might as well do it legit and earn it the right way)
Any previous experience to share on how Microsoft deems you eligible for the product software?
DavidNov 29th 2006 2:03PM
Hey Bob, what exactly did you do to get it "completed"?
WoodwaterNov 29th 2006 2:33PM
I guess we just sit and wait until it completes.
I sincerly hope they send me the copy because I also sat through 3 hours worth.
They weren't that bad, just the one about Live Meeting with this Indian guy with a thick accent. He was hard to understand. No offence meant in any way, I'm from Canada so, it might just be me. :P

Stupid US-only offers. Grr.
StevenNov 29th 2006 6:20PM
They all went to pending after I downloaded them and watched them. I was actually able to stream one instead of playing it downloaded, but it still just says Pending (no Completed icon)....
DavidNov 29th 2006 6:35PM
I just e-mailed the representative and he responded with:
Hello David,
After you complete a webcast, it takes 24 hours for your completion of the offering to be validated in the system. If you completed the webcast, you will receive credit after it has been validated. However, the website will say pending until then. Please let us know if you have any other questions.
Thanks!

Hope that helps with your fears!

As an update to my situation from yesterday, I now have one webcast shown as "completed" with two more pending. The one shown as completed is one I had to download and watch offline (due to my company's network settings, I guess). That's good news to me.
LugoseNov 30th 2006 9:51AM
So anyone know what it means when it says "pending" next to the webcasts that you've registered for. I've already "watched" the webcast and filled out the survey. Anybody complete this thing?
WoodwaterNov 30th 2006 5:26PM
Ok.
Once you completed the viewing, they have to check to make sure you DID listen to it.
I'm not sure how they do it, they just do.
And until they do, it's "Pending".
I watched mine yesterday and they are all completed now.
I've sent an email and received an answer comfirming this.
Cheers to all, soooooo happy to get my hands on a copy of Vista for free!

fyi- the terms say "Limit one gift per person per Offer". But if you look at the first sentence it says "The Power Together Campaign consists of two (2)offers, the Windows Vista Business Offer and the Microsoft Office Professional 2007 Offer". So for each offer, you are limited to one gift per person (i.e. only one copy of the Vista). This means that we are all eligible to participate in both offers (assuming the other eligibility requirements are met).

Well, it shows me as having 3 completed for Vista. Here's to hoping I actually get a copy.
JeffDec 6th 2006 7:57AM
I had to email their tech support...this was days ago, but finally got a response after I had finihsed viewing all the Win Vista required web casts. The tech suppor reply email said "It appears you have qualifited for the free gift. Please let us know of any other support related questions. Thanks, Tech Support." Could be a "canned" response and they didn't address my problem (which I had fixed and was able to move on and watch the vids), but I think I made it to the next step in a free copy of Vista. Will check back here and let you all know.
PS-I also did the Office offer. I have completed by all my vids but no confirmation yet.

I missed this by a month and now they are all out.
What got me was that it was not available if you were a MS Partner.
I build systems, occasionally, so became a partner--which as far as I can tell has done nothing for me.
I could certainly use either of the products.
Wonder why they cut out any MS Partner--if it's legit, I don't understand--since they haven't made such an offer to us.
If it isn't legit, then why the exclusion--are they afraid if MSPartners sign up MS will get suspicous really fast and shut them down?
would MS really not allow there Partners to get the software, yet give it away to the general public?
any thoughts on that?
Also, to transmit your SSN over the internet, to who knows where--if it's a bank, I can understand, but to someone else so they can file an IRS form?
I guess it's possible, but seems fishy to me.
I'd don't like to give anything, real email, address, anything unless I know it is a legit site. It is a https site and securely locked with some sort of tunneling. So, I'd say watch out.
but hey, if you get one and can't use it, I'll be happy to, as a one person MS Partner, to take it off your hands--unless it's pirated. If it's that, I could loose my MCSE.
I wonder what this is all about?
I'll write to the partner site and see what they say.
If I get an interesting answer, I'll post it.
Bob
