You left out a "wait a year" option, which feels about right to me!
Here's the bottom line: I love XP. (I'm, like, the only person who ever said that.) Why? It's an extremely mature OS, not necessarily the release itself so much as the software that's built up to support it.
As a musician, media artist, and visual performer, I need everything to work 100% of the time. That means there's no way I'll EVER upgrade an OS the day it comes out. Now that I have multiple PCs, I might migrate one sooner to ease the transition, but I need to wait on drivers, etc., for full support. And, more than that, having the latest-and-greatest is nowhere near as important as having the most reliable, in terms of performance. Even on my Mac, I've had to be conservative (including those "point" releases that keep trying to install themselves the night of a gig).
Vista does look like it will eventually mean good things for music and visuals, but in the meantime, I'm going to be patient.
I'll turn in that Vista Express coupon, though, if I manage to pick up a new system in '06. I'll just have to hide the box from myself so I don't go and break my system. At most, I'll dual-boot.
