After using Ubuntu for the last 4 months I realise I don't need Windows for much, so I won't upgrade.

I won't upgrade to Vista at all unless some compelling need arises. Microsoft has surely felt the pain of taking half a decade to get Vista out. I'm anticipating the next version of Windows, which I expect to see in 2010. That one may be radically different, and potentially great. On the other hand, Linux may be my primary OS by then. :-)

I am running a home built PC with Xp on one hard drive and Vista RC2 on the other. I have been upgrading Vista since the first Beta. It is improving but I see no reason to throw XP under the bus. Vista is an insane memory hog .If you plan on upgrading be prepaired to also move up to 2 gigs of memory. As I type this with no other programs running I am using 511 Megs of memory, running Quake 4 or Half life ep 1 maxes out my small 1 Gig of DDR2 memory.
I like alot of the features but unless you are going big (new PC with Core duo, Sata2 HD's and 2 gigs of memory and a new 1 gig 8800 HDCP video card) stay on the porch. Oh yea my wireless MX 700 logitech key board and mouse only have basic functions with Vista, same with Audiology Z2 sound card, and HP 1215C photo printer.
DX 10 sounds promising for gamers but you will need a $1000. video card to get the full effects from it. Hold on to XP with both hands for a few more years. Vista is a late 2008 $3000. progect.

I don't care what people say about Microsoft, their products rock. I'm buying new machines in readiness for Vista Ultimate. It's not just the eye candy factor; I want the new OS so it can take advantage of the new CPUs.

It'll be a least till SP1, or when I buy/build a new system, whichever comes first. For me it's inevitable that I'll upgrade to Vista. I just don't want to suffer through the whole pre-SP1 bugfix frenzy. Let others suffer with hardware and software that is labeled "Vista Ready" that isn't, let others discover that the "Vista Patch" erases saved data, and let other mourn that the "Vista drivers" don't install. I'll be waiting, browsing the forums. Thank you brave souls for all your suffering, you'll help me upgrade to Vista painlessly.
