Yesterday Windows Defender
left beta-land and the final version is now
available for download from Microsoft. Windows Defender is Microsoft's answer to malware, and the latest version has quite a few improvements over beta 2, including a new faster scanning engine, a streamlined UI, improved accessibility features, x64 support, and automated cleaning. Windows Defender is a free download but requires a Windows Genuine Advantage check, though apparently
there are ways around that.

i installed windows defender back at beta 1, it kinda just sits in the taskbar and does nothing. i tried to uninstall it last night, but it said i had to close all programs before it would uninstall, and gave me a list of programs that could not be running while uninstalling.
the uninstaller was on the list!!!! so you can't uninstall windows defender while uninstalling it.

Just thought I'd point out that the "ways around that" link at the end won't actually do too much good to anyone since you need to validate before you download the app. So far no one else has the full file (that's trustworthy anyways).
It's funny how to "protect" the consumer from Virus', Trojans, and other malware, we're now expected to have compiled code have free reign on our systems to tell us that we're trustworthy. I've got 2 windows boxes in the house that are both valid. Neither of them will work with the validation software. Hmm more security and no privacy or nothing? Nothing it is.

Wow, it's FREE?!?! Man, I wish they were releasing it for Mac OS.
Oh, wait, nevermind.

@okto: You wouldn't be laughing so hard if Macs had any market share worth mentioning.

I couldn't download Windows Defender because Windows Genuine Advantage doesn't recognize my OS. I am running Windows Vista RC1. :-(
