Windows use is growing quickly on mobile phones
In the world of smart phones, it seems like good old Microsoft is seeing some fast growth rates. The current numbers, according to Microsoft's Mobile and Embedded Devices division, were at 6 million last year, with hopes that they can double usage for this year. The biggest taker in the market is currently Nokia, who runs Symbian on their smart phones allowing for software that runs email, mobile TV, and games. The leading device in the smart phone arena is of course, the Blackberry, whose usage also hits the 6 million mark. Microsoft has a lot to contend with considering Blackberry plans to double its users every single year. I think there is certainly room for all four major players [including Palm] in the marketplace, but it really does make it that much harder to decide which devices to purchase and run software off. What do you think, who has your vote? Blackberry, Windows Mobile, Palm OS, or Symbian?

I'll wait for the iPhone before casting a vote ;-)

For me Windows Mobile!
The amount of programs available makes it the most interesting OS. Whatever you'll need on your pda/ppc/smartphone, you'll find it.

Pocket PC (Windows Mobile) has all I need and has great third party programs always available. Handwriting recognition (on Pocket PC, not Palm) makes like great, and Microsoft Voice Command takes the cake for me.

I can imagine, I really hated palm OS on my treo 650. This is my opinion and palm fanboys and go suck...

I have to say Symbian OS, Nokia phones are the most elegant and simplest designed interfaces( thats a good thing). I have a BB 7100 that has had the OS crash twice on me so badly that the phones had to be returned to T-Mo. Palm Os doesn't support 2 programs running at once which puts it behind Win, but it is the most stable I believe. I'd take the E70 over a Treo 680 hands down.

Do people really choose OS over hardware when it comes to phones? It's hard to imagine that someone would refuse a Nokia N95 just because it runs Symbian.
I've been using Windows Mobile for the past 3 years and it does do everything I want.. apart from forcing me to use ActiveSync 4 and Outlook but if I were to switch to Symbian tomorrow, I wouldn't miss a thing.

Since when does PalmOS don't support 2 apps running at once? I've been listening to music while reading on AvantGo (or playing games) at the same time for years! What is this if not an example of being able to run 2 programs at once?
While I prefer PalmOS for its simplicity, its bound to become the Linux/OSX of the smartphones with only a small marketshare.
But still I'm not resigned to be forced to use a Task Manager and a Registry editor on a daily basis on such small devices (I'm always having problems with my iPaq, and I don't really use it for this reason). I hope WM will get better before we have no choices anymore.

Daz - Did people stay away from Macs because they didn't run windows? Same will happen with phones. And since the hardware in phones is becoming very similar to PCs, I think Microsoft has the experience and muscle to dominate the market.

Symbian OS by far.

Seeing as I work for Nokia and get free nokia enterprise phones...I could be a little biased. Before we got bought by Nok I used a pocket pc and hated it. When we got Treo 700p's way before they were announced I carried one for a while, but the battery couldn't make it through one whole day.
I don't really want to buy software to sync with my mac, so windows mobile is still out.
Treos are ok, but not being able to go a whole day with wireless email on a charge is obnoxious.
I've had a nokia 9300 for a while now and love it. I might have to move to an eseries device like the e61 at some point...but I hope not.

Windows Mobile and Symbian are the only games in town.
RIM is a one trick pony. RIM would do well to become a software company and seel their goods to Nokia, sony and MS is possible.
Palm is a has been with its rickety OS and bad file mgmt. However it remains a good option for PDA only devices, but they are never going to be the majority again.
Microsoft has work to do with WM5. It is slow, has a very poor browser and doesn't work well with hardware codecs. WM6 will be real time, so perhaps this will address some concerns.
Symbian almost has it all at the moment. Great browser, screens, battery life and add-on applications. Its a pity that it is not big in the US, mainly due to mobile operators. Cingular has taken arguably the best PDA in the world, the E61, and dumbed it down without 3G or wifi to the E62.
