Make beautiful fractal flames with Apophysis
Fractal flames are a particularly colorful and elegant breed of fractal. We've seen them previously in the beautiful Electric Sheep screensaver, but if you're feeling artsy and mathsy today you can make your own using Apophysis. It's an open source program for Windows that does fractal flames and fractal flames only. Getting started with Apophysis isn't too tough, but MS Paint it ain't. To really use the program to its fullest you're going to have to have to understand what a lot of numbers mean. Fractals are just math, after all. For that, you'll want to head to the Apophsys wiki where there's documentation, scrips and scripting reference, and links to tutorials. Have been using this program for 2 years and *warning* it is an extremely addictive and wonderful program! Oh and I completely disagree with your comments - you do NOT need to know any math to work with Apophysis. The program does it all for you!

You can also create the flames inside Gimp using a built in plugin. It uses FLAM3, the same rendering engine as Apophysis and you can do it on any OS as well as do additional editing to the image.

It's highly addictive. I've been using Apophysis for 3-4 years, maybe longer. (Can't remember). I have a series of free e-paintings at two of my sites: www.countwordula.com and www.chaosreview.com
You don't need to know about strange attractors and dynamical systems, but it doesn't hurt.
