Microsoft releases Internet Explorer 7
Even though Yahoo might have released IE7 a tad early, Microsoft still managed to get it officially out the door on their scheduled date of October 18th 2006, a mere 100 years since their last release. Microsoft has a lot riding on this one. Bill Gates has promised a revamp of the market leading browser, and everyone is expecting something big from IE since it has been so long since the last release. Browsers like Firefox are gaining ground, and IE7 better prove something to users, or it could face a steady decline as it has in the past few years. So needless to say, the browser wars are back on. IE7 is out, and Firefox is just waiting to pounce on the new Microsoft browser in the next few days with Firefox 2 (In both Mac and PC formats).
My knees are shaking right now at Microsoft's nice warning message as shown above, and I haven't built up the nerve to run the install. Give me some time. In the meantime, if anyone has any experience with the new IE7, drop us a line.
Look out for a comparison of the two new browsers in an upcoming post.

I downloaded IE7 on Wed. 10/18 using FlashGet. It took only 7 minutes to download. Oh! yes, I disabled all of my anti-programs as was suggested. So far it has been working nicely.

Setup guide for those that wanted it
http://thecomputerguy.info/index.php?topic=10.msg10
1. Download VPC 2004
2. Download the Internet Explorer 6 Testing VPC Image
To install VPC just run the EXE and follow the prompts, go with defaults.
Extract the virtual machine from the archive and save it where ever you like (C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\My Documents\My Virtual Machines is the default location for VMs)
Now all we have is a VHD file, its just the virtual HDD. We need to create the Virtual hardware.
1. Open the VPC console (Start -> All Programs -> Microsoft Virtual PC)
2. If you have no virtual machines it will start the create wizard, otherwise select "new" from the menu on the right hand side
3. Select Create a Virtual Machine on the Options screen
4. Name your VM on the Virtual Machine Name and location screen, i'm using IE6 Test just to give it a name
5. On the OS Selection screen select Windows XP
6. On the Memory selection screen 128 will be the default give the virtual machine what you can afford (256 Min or things will be slightly painful)
7. On the Virtual HDD Options screen select use an existing VHD and hit next.
8. On the VHD location screen select browse and navigate to where you extracted the files. Look for IE6Test.vhd (If you have file extensions turned off just look for IE6Test
9. And finish
Open the VPC console and double click IE6 Test
The virtual machine is set to use your computers network adapter so if you have DHCP running it will get its own IP, if not it will get an APIPA address (169.254.x.y)
This will be addressable as a totally separate computer to the host so if you want to connect to the host make sure DNS is set up properly or dump an entry in the VMs Host file.
