A43 File Management Utility
I've tried a number of Windows Explorer replacements, and while I always seem to migrate back to using it, I can't help but think there's a better option out there somewhere. The latest in my list of trials has been with a program called A43 File Management Utility. I'm sort of on the fence about this one; it has a number of features that are missing from Windows Explorer, but some of them feel like they've only been half implemented. For example, clicking on an image file while the image viewing pane is open does not automatically load the image to see; you need to drag the file into the viewer for it to show up. On the other hand, A43's built in handling of zip and rar compressed files is seamless and extremely easy to use. It's also a very fast file manager, in that it has stripped out all the eye-candy that XP turns on by default, and loads folders very quickly. This speediness is offset by the occasional short lock-up. I haven't yet determined the cause of these lockups, but it could certainly be due to some other software utility running on my system; I test a lot of software, as I'm sure you can imagine.
Anyhow, A43 falls firmly into the maybe category for me. Being that it's small and fast, I'm inclined to leave it sitting on my desktop and give it a try every so often to see if it grows on me.

I'm a big fan of xplorer² professional. It takes a little work to learn about what it can do because it so feature-rich. You can download a trial version at http://zabkat.com

I am going to try it out because I have been looking for a good replacement too. I wonder if there is a free one out there that does folder syncs though, Free Commander and utilities that just sync (SyncToy, TreeComp, etc.) just don't cut it for me for some reason.

I'm a satisfied user of Charles Prineas' Fileviewer.
I prefer Fileviewer because; easy to customise with user commands, good hex viewer, good support for tar/gz/zip, good support for printer (including 2-up), good reg exp search facility ...
You can find it at

Its been going 10 years or more. Just yesterday (2006-Oct-16) I received email announcing latest (Ver8) release. I quote
"The main new features in Version 8 are:
- Dual Pane Mode
- Thumbnails Mode
- Multiple File Windows
- Support for Alternate Data Streams (ADS)
"
Its good.

I still believe that one day, one day some explorer replacement will have a custom size of the icons in the right column..
