3 more years of ICANN
The ICANN retains its grip on being the Internet's addressing center. The US Commerce Department has taken a more hands-off approach at its oversight of the company. Of course all the other countries who are critics of ICANN are going to complain, since they don't want the US having control of any part of the Internet. Frankly, I don't care what they think. The Internet works just fine, so don't go screwing it up by letting the oversight change hands. I don't even like the idea of the UN taking over the Internet either. At least ICANN will be around for another three years.

What a stagerring display of ignorance! This is the trouble with blogs, everyone's allowed to have an opinion.

@ 1.
I agree with you, the author of this entry just shows an arrogant stupidity and ignorance.

And Americans wonder why people dislike them abroad.

So all of you have too much free time? Thought you would bash an author instead of offering a REAL opinion, huh?
Timmah!Oct 4th 2006 9:50PM
Sensitive much Ryan?
Since you continue to parade your ignorance of anything outside the little town you call home, here goes..
I'm american. I despise the fact that we think we can unilaterally control and police the rest of the world as we see fit. It's true with war, politics, economics, what have you. Anything laid down by the UN is a joke to our government. Why is that? Who do we think we are?
You might believe that ICANN is fine the way it is, but the internet doesn't belong a country. It's critical to businesses and individuals all across the world. Yes that's right, there's a whole other world outside our country. Maybe if you travelled a little bit, you might know that.
You know what? I was going to write a whole lot more about this, but it's nothing that hasn't been said before. I'm probably just wasting my time. So screw it, enjoy your ignorace (I've heard it's blissful).

Rant much Timmah!?
The U.S. built the system. It is not a broken system, the only way to screw it up is to 'fix' it. Though, to be fair, the whole .mobi TLD scam does not inspire confidence.
The UN was a nice idea, but really, any grown-up can see that is has become a joke. That is a system that does need fixing, maybe you could apply yourself to fixing that Timmah!?

I am also an American, and while I don't think that we should control everything, I think we should retain control of what we already do have. Leave well enough alone. I never said America owned/controlled the Internet. ICANN is not the Internet, as some seem to think, it is merely one part of it. There is always someone whining that the US controls everything in other countries, and the fact is that the US invented the Internet (formerly ARPAnet), so naturally we should be able to "control" it (if that is even possible). Anyone who doesn't like it can create their own system in their own country, it is their choice.
The Internet should be an open-source type of thing, where no one regulates it, and everyone has access to it. That is the only way it is fair to everyone. As far as ICANN goes, it is fine, don't change it, leave it alone. That is all I'm saying.

Ill informed and ignorant. The US 'invented' the Internet so therefore it should control it? If other nations followed that motto in other aspects of technology I think the US would be pretty much screwed and people like Ryan would be crying fowl.

This is starting to remind me of the whole GPS constellation debacle. US built it, US maintains it, everybody else b*tched and moaned, we gave 'em access. Others realized that it was far more accurate than the signal being given access too, so they lobbied. Clinton gave access, next thing we know GPS is used to guide hostile missiles with pinpoint accuracy AGAINST the country that BUILT and MAINTAINS it.
How is this relevant?
Figure it out. Only takes two maybe three intuitive leaps.

YES. The US invented the internet and should be allowed to control it. Just look how poor the UN is run, can you imagine how horrible the internet would be if the rest of the world could control it?
Mustang 2010Oct 10th 2006 4:57PM
Timmah!: You talk as if the rest of the world is doing us a favor by using the internet. We, the united states, invented the internet and are allow the rest of the world to use it....not the other way around. If they dont like the way its run too bad, just to use it.
