It looks like Microsoft could have finally realized that the future of software is all about online applications. Microsoft has said that they
might be considering launching an online free, ad supported version of its software. The software it might be planning on integrating for online usage is
Microsoft Works, which retails for $50 currently. Works has a calendar, spreadsheet, web browser, and email. It is currently a pretty basic home use software package, but at least Microsoft is stepping into the new software generation, and thinking about providing it for free online use.

With Google rolling out Spreadsheets, Calendar and friends I guess they've been forced to react, much in the same way they did with Netscape back in the "oh shoot we've missed the boat, quick get the check book out" dyas.
This strikes me as an ad-hoc attempt at sealing a lead on an integrated online desktop package. Let's watch this space...

Ms Works is not that good, is somewhere on the same level as Corel's Wordperfect. Even if it'll be free, I'll still prefer OpenOffice.
