Windows Media Encoder 9
This may be one of the many long lost files tucked away on Microsoft's website that you could never find if you looked for 100 years unless you had nifty things like Google to find it. Some of you are thinking "I already knew about this, why is this news." Well, if you knew about it, why didn't you say so, help a techie out, okay? Holding out on me, huh? Whatever. For anyone (like me) late to the party, WM Encoder will encode many different file types both audio and video into Windows Media format. It is easy to use and supports conversion from these formats to Windows Media format: .asf, .avi, .bmp, .jpg, .mpg, .wmv, .mp3, .wav, .wma. Many different bitrates are supported, both constant and variable bit rate. Genuine Microsoft Validation is required to download this file.
The initial screen where you can pick several common tasks.
Selecting the source and output files.
Selecting the distribution method, which helps narrow bit rate and resolution.
Encoding options, including bit rate (not shown, under the dropdown currently).
Info screen, makes it wasy to enter whatever you want.
The actual encoding process window, which shows all the vital details and progress.

I have converted many videos into WMV, but here is my problem with the format now. I recently purchased a MacBook and WMV is useless when trying to make IMovie files and so forth. I used Windows Movie Maker to convert my video from Digital 8 and then I would make DVDs using Ulead Movie Factory and with the same source file I would convert for the web. Now that I dont have my Windows machine anymore all of the those files are worthless and I lack the knowledge and energy to figure it out. Back to the TAPE!

Cool program.
I have genuine windows but I don't want to validate just to download.
They check again once you try to install it anyway.
soft32.com has it without putting MS spyware in your browser.

To poster #1 you can use Sony Vegas Movie Studio 6 to easily convert from WMV to anything else. Also I remember that the apple has a component for Quicktime to import WMV 9 files http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/wmv9component.html
Hope that helps. I've been recording in WMV format for about 10 years so I know a few tricks in this department!

Thanks everyone. I can play WMV on the mac. I cannot import WMV into Imovie. I have a Mac so downloading Sony Vegas..... is not an option.
You can have QT convert to MOV, but you have to have the registered version of QT. I dont have it and have just basically been to lazy or un-motivated? to figure it all right now.
Last note, if you have a site that hosts WMV on a site, you have to turn Rosetta on for Safari to be able to play it on the new Intel Macs. WMV is not a true cross platform video codec. Sorry but it just isnt. Real, Flash video both play fantastically.
Apple now owns over a %12 market share so I only see that getting bigger. Better to prepare for the inevitable.

First of all, here's the homepage and some more info about this

Second, there's a new version of media encoder with VC-1 support (next gen DVD format). This however needs a very powerful system to run at a desecnt speed while encoding VC-1
