Free Streaming Quotes On Yahoo Finance
Free streaming stock quotes have made an appearance on Yahoo! Finance with little to no fanfare.
Above the charts on the individual stock pages and on Yahoo Finance's front page you will see
. Click the "On" button provides a drop down display of streaming stock price information. Click on the "?" and learn that you can leave this open for up to 25 minutes and although these are streaming, they are not "real-time". They are delayed 15 minutes.
Streaming quotes has only been offered with real-time information as part of a Yahoo Finance premium service package.

Yahoo! is eliminating their free "Real Time ECN" quotes this week, but will happily offer them to you for a fee:
("Starting September, we will no longer be offering real-time ECN data due to pricing changes by the exchanges. For real-time quotes [including real-time pre/post market data], sign up for a free trial of Real-time Quotes").
If eliminating free services is their answer to the competition from Google Finance (which, by the way, continues to offer FREE real-time quotes), it looks like yet another bad decision by Yahoo. Once the message boards at Google Finance become more active, Yahoo Finance will have nothing more to set it apart.

For some reason I thought all stock quotes from the major exchanges were always 15-20 minutes delayed. Unless you were willing to pay for real-time data.
I'm not sure what is meant by 'streaming', though. The term seems to imply that the data is realtime. Does it mean it is scrolling across the screen, 15 minutes delayed? Is that news?

99% of the time, free quotes are delayed. If you have an online trading account, you can view real-time quotes without paying extra (unless you want something more robust).
"Streaming quotes" simply means the the display is auto-updated (and/or scrolling) on your screen, although the quotes are still 15-20 minutes delayed, unlike "real-time streaming" quotes.

My Yahoo Finance does not show the NEW Streaming Quotes On/Off option under the Market Summary area as you state in your August 26, 2006 posting on this web site. Consquently, I can't get the streaming quotes. Do you have any ideas? Thank you in advance. H W Eichenauer
