AOL not only plans to offer
5GB free online storage space to web users in September, but also
free personalized email domains (one per user). According to the press release on Time Warner's home page, AOL will be giving out free email domains, where you can setup up to 100 aliases to use with your domain. The service will be called the "AOL My eAddress" service, and users will be able to use .com or .net domains to customize their email addresses. This service will apparently tie in with AIM, AIM Pages, and other AOL services. Looks like AOL is trying to integrate all their services and give users one easy way to identify themselves outside of the AOL.com and AIM.com domains. AOL is leading the way with this. Other services out there have a "managed custom domain" area like Gmail and Windows Live. AOL is the first I know of to hand them out. Woot!

I've been using Gmail Hosted for my .com domain for the past month and it is terrific.

I have been using Gmail for my domain and its great. Plus I have also have access to Calendar and Google Talk! One thing you should've clearly mentioned is, that AOL - *** your employer ***- will own the domain. So if at any point, you need to move to a different provider, you are screwed... I would rather pay the measly $8 a year it takes to register a domain and have it hosted at Google.

So for absolutely no cost or obligation I can help AOL take thousands of otherwise good and useful domain names off the market? Cool! Just think of how quickly the last remaining decent domain names will disappear. Then, next year when I open my new business, I'll be able to reserve hamburgerhut112948bse32.com or flowerz4u99218f32.com!
(rolls eyes)
For those of you using this legitimately, good for you. For the rest of the bunch who will reserve their 127th free email address with free domain name and then adandon it 3 days after you start receiving spam, please resist sending a potentially decent domain to the grave.

The Windows Live Beta gave away free domains at one point, I got one.. but the service is so restrictive, I can barely use it. Hope AOL does a better job.
