Does anyone only design for FF, Safari, Opera, or IE? Speak up, let me hear you. If you do, I think you are crazy, please explain why you are not. As a few have pointed out, it would be nice from a developer's viewpoint if there was only one browser. But why doesn't MS support the standards? I still don't see any advantage for them in not supporting the HTML and CSS standards.
Here's something else though, how many people do you know that go around proselytizing for IE? How many for FF? All my clients get my IE rant (that would be a pro FF rant) and, for what ever reason, they like and trust me and listen to me. But I am fair, if the final version of IE7 corrects the security issues and fixes the rendering bugs, there will be no more rant, and I may well go back to IE. I am just too old now to fiddle around with having a bunch of browsers.
As for the 'average Joe' not having to worry about going to 'bad' web sites, I have several clients that call and email me repeatedly asking if this or that email is legitimate or if it is phishing. So it is the average Joe that needs the security more then anyone else and I do hope that IE7 gives it to them.
IE is not the worst browser, but which one is? I vote for Netscape 6, that was a funny browser. That browser was so good that it skipped a whole iteration and went from 4.7 to 6, that was classic.
