Everyone needs a web server right? Sure they do, at least in my mind. Anyone writing and developing anything for the web at least. Apache is usually the web-server of choice. It is powerful, flexible, free and fairly easy to use. An alternative to Apache is the (also free)
Xitami web server. It is more light weight than Apache but is also quite easy to use and configure. Xitami has a nice GUI to help you configure the many settings it has to run your web server. I currently use Xitami as a test-bed web server for my many projects at work. I'm not sure how you pronounce Xitami, but since this blog is only print and not audio at this point, I am going to let you deliberate about that as long as you like. Have fun!

I've used this for several years and am VERY happy with the operation.

Incidentally, the "XITAMI" I pronounce (or at least THINK is) as exit-AH-me, and they coined it as "IMATIX" backwards...

Seems a bit dated... copyright information on the web site anywhere from 1999 to 2003, FAQ page that mentions Y2K support, last award on the awards page is 1999 and the latest release has nothing more recent that July 2004 (however the revision history page doesn't show anything past 2000)... doesn't seem like there is any active development.

I agree, I thought it was a little dated as well, but works great. The announcement on the front page about there now being XML functionality is newer I think. It wasn't there when I visited the site several months ago. I loved XITAMI because with the system config I had, Apache just would not behave, and I needed something quick and dirty that day.

The free version of the Abyss Web Server from www.aprelium.com is what I have been using for the last several years, and I think it's mighty sweet. It supports all the good things a Web server is supposed to, and it has an http-based configuration interface to spare you from config-file hell.

Might want to look into LiteSpeed instead: http://litespeedtech.com/
It's a drop-in replacement for Apache, is *insanely* fast, and is free. It's also got a web-UI to manage everything.
Xitami is *old* and I would not recommend anyone use it.

Pronouncing Xitami is pretty easy, but it makes me wonder if any of the people naming it that way every tried...
X, when it starts a word, is usually pronounces as "z" or "sh", depending (z more in english, sh more in spanish, chinese, and several other languages). So, either zit-a-me or shit-a-mi.
