The Ubuntu Linux distribution has made incredible strides since its launch in 2004. Sure, giant stacks of cash in Mark Shuttleworth's war chest, used to conquer programming "bounties" for usability, features and bugfixes, have helped to aid the fledgling distribution.Still, the rapid advance of Ubuntu towards the mainstream desktop cannot be ignored. If you're driving up the 101, Northbound, just after the Ralston exit in Redwood City, CA, you'll have an extra reason to stand up and pay attention to the upstart: This billboard proclaiming "Ubuntu: Linux for (servers and) human beings"

Ubuntu must be the most overhyped OS yet, SuSE and Mandriva are so much better.

Having used all three, both on servers and desktops, I really have to say you're wrong. You're obviously entitled to an opinion but, Ubuntu is simply the slickest, most well constructed and most standards adhering Linux distribution available today.

SuSE has so many more features, a better design and a easier to use install and control panel set-up.
Mandriva follows. Ubuntu is a raw, ugly stripped OS.

I am running Ubuntu and have tried Suse. They are excellent operating systems. First class open source software is available for almost every task. The helpful people on the support forums can resolve most operating issues. Linux' foremost problem is the lack of support from OEM manufacturers. It is sometimes difficult to get peripherals such as modems and routers operating, however that is resolving itself as it gains widespread acceptance.

I have to admit I'm partial to Ubuntu after trying several other distros. Now if only I could figure out what to do with these stacks of CDs they send me!

I have been a MS user forever, and never paid Linux any attention until Ubuntu made it easy and fun to try out (thank you LiveCD). After finding and installing the EasyUbuntu updates, I rarely look back. I still have Windows dual booting, but I really don’t need it much. I use the Yahoo Music Unlimited in XP, and there is no way to get Janus compatible WMA files to play without WMP10 installed.
They are really doing a great job with this distro regarding usability for Non-Linux people (also known as "Human Beings"). They have are build brand recognition, and mindshare. I really think Ubuntu is doing great things. And gnome is awesome.

Ubuntu's liveCD is slow. For anyone that want's to dabble, knoppix is the best. Switching from windows, ubuntu is the best. The forums are the most active, so support will be the easiest to get from there. Then try to switch from gnome to KDE. then Get slackware with KDE, then get blackbox. Finally, run everything from a shell and you will be KING.

all i have to say is that i'm happy to see this after many many long months of loving my ubntu system. And yes i have tried so many other os's and i just want to say is that ubuntu beats them all without a doubt in my opinion. I'd much rather see ubuntu billboards rather than ads for ..... anything other than victoria secret (yup, i like those)
