AOL to provide 5GB of online storage for free
AOL (this blog's parent company) announced today that starting next month it will offer 5GB of free online storage for all web users. The free online storage will start in September, and will be powered by Xdrive, a service acquired by AOL late last year. There will be no charges for uploading or downloading documents and files, and users will be able to access their files at www.xdrive.com.
The service will allow users to store digital photos, videos, and important documents in Xdrive's secure data facility, and will include:
- 5 Gigabytes (GB) secure online storage at no cost
- No charges for uploads or downloads
- Ability to store any type of file, including photos, music, video, and documents
- Drag and drop interface between online storage and hard drive
- Access to files through any Web-connected PC or mobile device
- Permission-based file and folder sharing
- Online collaboration via shared files
- Scheduled automatic backups
- Automatic upload of e-mail attachments from providers including AOL Mail, AIM Mail, or any non-AOL POP3 or IMAP-compatible mail providers
- Full-resolution photo storage
- Easy access to AOL Pictures for professional prints and photo gifts
The free Xdrive service will begin in early September and will be available to anyone with an AOL account or AIM screenname.

Update: As several readers pointed out, the original post was somewhat "press-releasey," particularly given our ties to AOL. Though we're genuinely excited about this service, we've edited the post accordingly. --Jordan Running.

That's a lot of storage. But it all depends on what you're using it. Sure for backing up your documents even 1Gb will suffice.
Problem gets when you have like 50Gb of data needed to be stored online and a 256Kb/s upload rate, seems like it will get about 3 days uploading everything and assuming nothing gets interrupted. I would opt for external drive back up.

Will AOL share the contents of our 5gb with the rest of the interenet like our search queries? lol

Always wanted something like this. I would ideally like it to be shareable (with & without the password). Quick uploads, no waiting times (like rapidshitshare & megasuckload). I just hope they don't screw up the opportunity which actually exists at this point of time

I am sorry but I just had to SHOUT, I hate these offers of free, when they take your credit card. Just a big con.
If they believed in their product it wouldnt be neccessary.
I am going to wait for http://www.omnidrive.com/ they seem more like an honest lot. I am also convienced that having your data hosted else where is a better option and I for one am willing to pay.

The latest release from Xdrive is Xdrive Plus.
In order to get a Free 5GB Xdrive Plus storage account you will need an AOL screen name, if you don't have one then you can signup for one free and get an AOL email account with 2GB of space too.
Now that you have your new AOL screen name and password you can use them to sign in to your Xdrive Plus account and store many types of digital assets, like Word files, Excel files, PDF files, pictures, music, your browser bookmarks, your AOL email attachments, AOL Pictures.
Using the Xdrive Plus Web Interface you'll be able to upload files or folders, share them with others. These files can be pictures, Word files, Excel files, etc.
Using our Desktop Application you will be able to do things with your Xdrive Plus account, like drag and drop files from your local (C: drive) to your Internet Hard Drive (X: drive).
The Desktop Application also provides other features, like scheduling backups, and backup now.
Our competitors do not offer the combination of services that an Xdrive Plus account offers. If you need more space then you can upgrade to 50GB for $9.95 a month or $99.50 annually.
If you are an AOL consumers who subscribes to other AOL Premium Services of more then $23.95 a month you'll get your Xdrive Plus 50GB for Free.
Now that you've got your Xdrive Plus account you can take your data with you where ever you go. How?
Using your AOL credentials you can login using any computer that has an Internet connection, just use a browser and go to www.xdrive.com and enter your screen name and password to access your digital assets anytime, anyplace.
Do you have a WAP enabled PDA or cell phone? Soon you will be able to access your digital assets stored on your Internet Hard Drive using Xdrive Mobile Service and download your digital assets.

Hey, I did try Xdrive. First of all, it is restricted to AOL users. Secondly, the whole signup process was messy and overlong. To catch a glimpse of Xdrive web interface, I had to wait and wait. I had never encountered such issues with another online service I use called IBackup.
Uploading my files using Xdrive looked really painful. Most of the time, it was awfully slow. Sometimes I was unable to login also. God knows the reasons for the error messages that kept appearing. All these drove me to trying IBackup for Windows. It’s a hassle-free application and I did find it suited to my needs, even though there is no free offer.
Backups and restores are really fast. I scheduled daily backups of all my important data and so far no failures reported. I can easily restore old versions of files through Snapshots. To share my files, all I have to do is to ask Web-Manager to create sharable links. I have to email these links to people with whom I wish to collaborate. I can also Private Share data with another IBackup user. I can manage my online account with IDrive that maps my online IBackup account as a network drive on my computer.
All in all this is a much better application for online backups and restores of my files and folders. No need to pay your bills twice and there will no problems with refunds.

The problem with xdrive is it is slow and unstable.
I am using mozy and it is a very good solution for online backup, with 2 GB for free:

Hi, if you are not all crazy over ‘free online storage’ try IBackup for Windows (http://www.ibackup.com/ibwin_new.htm), rated by none other than PC World magazine as the `best all-around backup service’.
Backups and restores of your favorite files and folders with IBackup are really fast. The application does incremental and compressed backups of critical data. Besides the Snapshots view of your backed up files, this application allows you to do one-way `Sync’ from your computer to your IBackup account. You can also use the IDrive (http://www.ibackup.com/IBDrive_new.htm)application, which when downloaded and installed will map an IBackup account as a network drive on your computer. Users can map, drag and drop files to their IBackup account from the Windows explorer.
Manage all your music and video files with IDrive Multimedia. On double-clicking a multimedia file, it will open up your media player and starts playing instantaneously. You can even create 'playlists' or do 'shuffle' using your favorite media player pointing to IDrive's media files. Streaming of video files is also instantaneous. You can even use advanced functions such as fast-forward with near instant response. IDrive Multimedia supports all multi-media formats that your PC applications support. You can also use Web-Manager (http://www.ibackup.com/webmanager.htm), IBackup browser-based application, to share your data with your friends and family by creating sharable links and emailing them.
