DaylightMap: Google Maps after dark
DaylightMap is the sort of thing you'd think some Google engineer would have done in his 20% time already. It's a Google Maps mashup that shows the Earth as it is: partly in sunlight, partly in shadow. It uses images from NASA to show Earth's man-made evening lights. By default DaylightMap shows the Earth as it is right now, but you can choose any time and date you wish. You can also switch to a night-only view and add markers by address, latitude and longitude, or mouse-click. The site's About page has some interesting technical details, as well as instructions on linking to particular views of the map.
