Stop Word 2007 from adding space between lines

Word 2007 is quite different than previous versions. One of the more aggravating features is it's addition of extra space between every line of text by default. The easiest and quickest way to fix this problem, is to click on the "line spacing" button to change the "Remove space before paragraph" option. This will stop Word from messing up your document, should you NOT want to double-space everything. I agree that the default of most in the academic community is double-spaced, but I thought Word 2007 and the entire Office System is aimed at business, not academia. In the business world the main method of operation for documents is single-spaced. Go figure. You can still download the Word 2007 beta, as part of The 2007 Office system from Microsoft. A Windows Live (formerly called ".NET passport") account is required.

I found that to stop the space from happening after your line of text, simply hold down SHIFT and then press ENTER. This will place the cursor immediantly underneath your text.
I found this heaps quicker in writing paragraphs of text too, as when I want to add a new paragraph, simply press ENTER and then begin on new paragraph. Simple!

To add to what I said above, the good thing about holding shift is, I dont have to change any settings, or create new templates just to do this!

Eric apologies just read your post as I glanced passed it before, you got there before me. Cheers!

Hi Everyone!
Super quick and easy way around this problem is this....
If you want a double space press ENTER.
If you want a single (1.15) space, press SHIFT+ENTER.
No defaults need to change. Hope this helps someone!

I've been looking for an easy solution to remove that pesky additional space - the tip in this article worked like a charm. Thank you!

In Word 2007 I cannot get the first line of the paragraph to not indent. I am on the trial for this version and will likely go back to 2003 version. I have spent days, dealt with online computer support (not Microsoft) and am so frustrated. Also with 1" margins set around doc, the lines stop several inches short of reaching the right margin. I have moved the margin arrows, set margins correctly and left justified.

I have found a way to stop the extra line spacing after each line:
Go to Page Layout
In the paragraph-box with the title 'Spacing' set the 'before' and 'after' to 0 pt.
Then click the little arrow in the right corner of the Pragraph box to open the dialog box, click default, answer yes - and there you go; no more annoying spaces after each line :)

Really... all one needs to do is to type: Shift + Enter, when only a single space is required between paragraphs.
Learn the keyboard shortcuts and champagne rains from the heavens...

Thanks for this article. It has annoyed and plagued me for a long time!! Solved now.

I don't know if this might help. I wrote a 105 page document with all 'enter' and zero shift-enters. I noticed that enter is represented by ^p symbol and shift-enter by ^11. So I first pressed the button that showed all the paragraph marks and then I using the find and replace box, I replaced all ^p by ^11. Now I just have to hit enter at the places I want paragraphs to start. I can use all word styles now. A lot of work needs not be done now.

I followed Eric's instructions on comment #9 and it works great when I create a new document, but it still doesn't carry over when I close Word 2007 and re-open the program later. Everything goes back to the 2007 defaults again. Is there a real "fix" that stays with it after closing Word and starting it up again?

Another great innovation from Microsoft. This is the reason they still lose customers to Apple.

Microsoft is the sloppiest, most inept software design company on this planet.
Creating a great and absolutely magnificent product does not necessarily get the most market share.
Perfect example:
Please tell me how this pile of crap: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GgBRAPo7v8s beat out this elegant and
astonishing competitor: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j02b8Fuz73A that is in some cases still unmatched by anything produced today.
The YEAR was 1993!
Everything about Microsoft, every aspect of their design methodology from their tedious compartmentalized Help systems to their Operating systems that can't keep simple settings set is all about being Tedious with no consideration about work flow.
Things like: Why is there no button to create a new folder in the explorer window? I customize it with no less than 23 options, but the option I use the most, creating a new folder is not there. How about right clicking on an image to save it and the window does not remember that the last time you used it you set it to display details because you happen to HATE little icons? Or one of 10,000 annoyances that they were too lazy to correct.
Ever delete several thousand files in sub folders? EVERY time it catches a system file like Thumbs.db or some other system file the delete process stops and puts up a message that says "blah, blah is a system file are you sure you want to delete it? [Yes] [Yes to All] [No] ... You press YES TO ALL and walk away, when you return there's another message with a YES TO ALL OPTION... and yet the Lemmings wait with baited breath for the next "new" load of diarrhea being released from this company.
Vista and Windows 7 are perfect examples of TEDIOUS with all of the extra clicks necessary to perform routine things. Some fool thought that by adding a message box with an OK button that the Operating System would be more secure. A monkey could be on the other end of the mouse; who would know?
Microsoft has always tried and always FAILED at guessing or predicting what we, the users would like to have as default settings for EVERYTHING they have produced starting with DOS in the early 80s.
Microsoft's design teams are filled with lazy programmers that keep on adding things on top of the gobbledygook from the previous versions with the philosophy not to change something that is "working" in case they might break it.
Since the early 80's I've lost months of time to fixing, tweaking, searching, resetting settings that get unset and a host of other things to bring the ANNOYANCE level of their products under control without any success.
Still using XP and office 2003 and will likely use them until such time that it becomes imperative to change.
I found this blog because I was looking for yet another "fix" for some sloppy auto-magic crap that Microcheese has hidden under the hood.
I copied some text from a website into Word and the result was more like padding between the lines that changing the line spacing because the line settings has no effect on the spacing.
Go figure!
Oh wait it should be ... why am I NOT surprised that that did not work?

Single line spacing
Word 2007
How do I set this as default??
I'm still getting 1.5 line spaces - every time I start a new word document I have to set up the Line Spacing and remove space after paragraph
It's driving me nuts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
lordgroverJun 20th 2007 10:08AM
I have to agree with Tim; I rarely use Word for anything other than a quick letter so the addition of extra line spaces when typing the address is very frustrating!

To get around this open paragraph options and set line spacing to single and Spacing-After to 0pt then click default button and this will change your normal.dot template to not do this anymore!
